Women’s Health Project, Mombasa Kenya
Project Description: The Women’s Health Project, established in 1993, is
a collaborative effort of the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of
Washington (UW), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mombasa County,
the Ministry of Health, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), and
the US President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
- To provide high quality care to at-risk and
HIV-positive women participating in the high-risk women’s cohort (Mombasa
Cohort).
- To conduct innovative HIV and STI prevention
and treatment research that will contribute substantially to local as well
as global knowledge and implementation of effective interventions.
- To support HIV and STI prevention, care, and
research efforts in Mombasa by training Kenyan researchers and
practitioners, implementing technology transfer, and contributing to
infrastructure development.
Research Physician
(1 Position)
Job Summary: The research physician will work as a professional
and part of the medical team that attends to research participants in a
long-term cohort of high-risk women.
The research physician will be
responsible for overall management and quality control of clinic activities in
the project.
These will include performing
procedures related to screening, enrollment and treatment of study
subjects.
In addition the project physician
will assist the Principal investigator in various project management
activities.
Essential Job Functions
- Supervise screening and enrolment of eligible
patients
- Perform physical examinations of patients
- Diagnose and treat study participants
- Prescription of ARVs and identification of
adverse events related to ART
- Avail laboratory results to study participants
and treat them accordingly
- Collect specimens, confirm correct labeling of
the specimen and supervise their transportation to the laboratory as well
as supervise accurate entry of laboratory results in to the study record
books
- Ensure that data collected is accurate.
Supervise data cleaning and correction processes.
- Maintain consents and consent audits for
ongoing projects.
- Supervise and train study staff on study
procedures and other relevant topics
- Develop standard operations procedures (SOPs)
of the clinic under supervision of the PI and training staff on the SOPs
annually.
- Prepare protocols, case report forms, informed
consent forms and other documentation for human subjects ethics review for
different studies
- Data analyses and presentation of research
progress and results at conferences or scientific meetings.
- Participate in writing and reviewing of
manuscripts.
- Coordinate and lead monthly journal clubs and
teaching conferences with collaborating groups in the region.
- Contribute articles to the quarterly clinic
newsletter.
- Cover for emergency calls from cohort participants,
especially those on ART.
- Perform any additional tasks as assigned by
the principal investigator.
Qualifications / Skills / Experience
- Medical Degree (MBChB or equivalent) and
licensed to practice in Kenya. Additional training such as MPH will be an
added benefit.
- Experience in the field of HIV/AIDS including
counseling, administration of antiretroviral therapy and data collection.
- Computer literacy skills with MS Office
software. Knowledge of statistical software such as SPSS, Stata will be an
added advantage.
- Good communication and inter-personal skills.
- Trained in good clinical practice and human
subjects’ research.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
Clinical Officer
(1 Position)
Job Summary: The clinical officer will work under the
supervision of the Clinic Section Head and in collaboration with the research
physicians to ensure smooth running of the research site.
Essential Job Functions
Work with the Research Physician on
the following tasks:
- Screening and enrolment of eligible patients
- Undertake physical examinations of patients.
- Diagnose and treat study participants.
- Prescription of ARVs and identification of
adverse events related to ART.
- Collect specimens and confirm correct labeling
of the specimens.
- Avail laboratory results to study participants
and treat them accordingly.
- Countercheck specimens and supervise their
transportation to the laboratory as well as supervise accurate entry of
laboratory results in to the study record books.
- Coordinate journal clubs with collaborating
institutions and also coordinate teaching conferences.
- Maintain consents and consent audits for
ongoing projects.
- Cover for emergency calls from cohort
participants, especially those on ART
- Conducting face-to-face questionnaires with
research participants
- Perform any additional tasks as assigned by
the clinic section head/principal investigator.
Qualifications / Skills / Experience
- Diploma in Clinical medicine and Surgery.
- Working experience in the field of HIV/AIDS
including counseling, administration of antiretroviral therapy and data
collection.
- Two or more years of experience is preferred.
- Computer literacy skills with MS Office
software. Statistical software skills e.g. SPSS or Stata will be an
advantage.
- Good communication skills, good inter-personal
skills
Administrative Assistant
(1 Position)
Job Summary: The
Administrative Assistant will work under the supervision of the Administrative
Section Head and in collaboration with the Community, Clinic and Laboratory
Section Heads to ensure smooth running of the research site.
The Administration Assistant provides
support in various administrative functions related to Human Resource
Management, Supplies Management, Financial Management and General Office
Administration.
Essential Job Functions
Work with the Administrative Section
Head on the following tasks:
- Reception duties
- Supplies Inventory Management
- Clerical and Records Management services
- Basic Accounting Records Management
- Perform any additional tasks as assigned by
the Administration Section Head/Principal Investigator.
Qualifications / Skills / Experience
- Diploma in Business Administration /
Management from a recognized institution
- Computer Proficiency in word processing,
spreadsheets, internet and email client software is a must
- Accounting software skills/certificate e.g.
QuickBooks will be an advantage.
- At least one year experience in
administration, preferably in the Non-Governmental Organization sector
- Excellent verbal and written communication
skills
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Excellent planning, multitasking and
organization skills
- Ability to work under pressure, flexible to
work long hours and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently and take
self-initiative
Community Worker
(1 Position)
Job Summary: The
community worker will work under the supervision of the Community Section Head
and in collaboration with other staff to ensure smooth running of the research
site.
The community worker will have a
self-initiative attitude.
Essential Job Functions
- Research subjects recruitment
- Patient tracing
- Counselling
- Planning and conducting outreach activities
- Data management - line listing
- Publication of the project’s newsletter
- Translation of newsletters and material for
the outreach program
- Filing and arranging of patients files in the
cabinets
- Clerical work as assigned by the Section Heads
- Any other duties assigned
Qualifications / Skills / Experience
- Applicants should have a minimum KCSE mean
score of C
- Applicants must hold a Diploma in Counseling
or Community Health/Development from a recognized institution.
- Preference will be given to applicants with
experience working in research settings involving key populations,
community mobilization, and those who have previously worked as peer
educators.
- S/he must have exceptional proficiency in
Swahili language and a thorough knowledge of the peri-urban geographical
region of Mombasa (research study catchment area).
- The job requires a lot of walking, and successful applicants must in addition be willing to work for long hours when necessary.
