The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), a pan-African women’s network, is looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of Advocacy Programme Associate 

This position provides an opportunity to support exciting advocacy initiatives and campaigns on women’s human rights in a stimulating, multicultural and dynamic environment. 

The position involves travel within Kenya, Africa and other parts of the world.
 
1. Responsibilities
 

The Programme Associate will support the Head of Advocacy Programme and other staff members when required, in managing the following tasks as part of implementing the FEMNET Strategic Plan and the Advocacy department annual work plans:
  • Oversee and manage selected advocacy projects and campaigns being implemented by FEMNET;
  • Work closely with the Head of Advocacy programme to prepare for different forms of interactions organized by FEMNET such as dialogues, meetings and conferences, including managing regular communication with target audiences and the logistics involved;
  • Facilitate African women’s participation in various sub-regional, regional and global forums particularly managing the communications and logistics prior to and during the post –event period to finalize the evaluation aspects;
  • Contribute articles/blogs for the Africa Women’s Journal, website and other strategic publications based on FEMNET’s experiences and programs;
  • Support the Head of Advocacy programme to meet the requirements of FEMNET’s monitoring, evaluation and reporting targets under specified projects;
  • Provide support in moderating and update specific list-serves and new media platforms such as Facebook that keep the key stakeholders for the Advocacy Programme engaged with the various processes;
  • Maintain a database on Advocacy projects, resources and partners and reporting requirements and work closely with the Head of Advocacy Programme to have this information updated on a quarterly basis;
  • Work closely with the relevant staff members to generate information for the FEMNET website on the Advocacy Programmes and activities;
  • Provide support, orientation and supervision of Advocacy Programme interns and volunteers where applicable
  • Represent FEMNET in external meetings/events relating to Advocacy.
  • Undertake other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
2. Qualifications, Skills and Experience for the Position
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Women’s or Gender studies, Development Studies, International relations or other relevant field. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing women’s rights and gender equality. 
  • Experience in carrying out advocacy in the area of women’s rights and gender equality, preferably at sub-regional or regional level in Africa. 
  • Experience in communications including electronic communications. 
  • Proven skills in administration, organization and problem solving. 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. 
  • High levels of initiative, creativity and self-motivation. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and willing to perform diverse tasks as needed. 
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Skype and social media. 
  • Bi-lingual in English and French. 
  • Ability to travel as needed.
3. Remuneration
 
The remuneration package is competitive and will be negotiable dependant on skills and experience.

Head of Communication

This position will offer the position holder an opportunity to work on exciting development communication initiatives and campaigns at pan-Africa level in a stimulating, multicultural and dynamic environment. 

The Head of Communication will report to the Program Manager of FEMNET. 

The position involves travel within Kenya, Africa and other parts of the world.
 

1. Overview: Provides strategic leadership and advice on all FEMNET’s communications and media activities 

Develops and implements external and internal communications strategies for FEMNET’s 

Raises the FEMNET’s profile and promotes its work to key audiences 

Oversees work of the Communications team, consultants and interns. 

Supports Resource Mobilization for the Organization and takes lead to raise resources needed to implement Communication activities.
 
2. Responsibilities include the following:
  • Provide strategic leadership and advice on all FEMNET’s communications and media activities.
  • Coordinating, organizing and ensuring that all the information and communication programmes and projects of the Network are implemented in line with its Strategic priorities and annual work plans.
  • Develop a media outreach strategy in support of FEMNET’s strategic objectives. Works with international media, as well as regional and national media to highlight issues affecting African women and girls and to promote best strategies and practices that address gender inequalities.
  • Ensuring that articles for the African Women’s Journal, a bi-annual analytical publication on gender and development issues are written, edited, translated, printed and distributed within the set timeframes.
  • Writing mid-year and annual reports for the organization.
  • Coordinating and manage the monitoring and evaluation of the Communication Programme.
  • Coordinating relevant training for the membership including participatory communications for development and social change.
  • Ensuring the Network’s participation and support to African women NGOs to engage in Freedom of Information and ICT policy formulation and implementation processes.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on activities of the communication programme on a quarterly basis and as may otherwise be required.
  • Representing the Network and/ or the Executive Director in relevant fora within Kenya the host country for the Regional Secretariat and at the regional (Africa) and international levels in order to facilitate the communications functions of the Network, as and when it may be required.
  • Overseeing the management of the Network’s Resource Centre.
  • Manage media relations on behalf of the organization.
  • Effectively manage the FEMNET website and ensure that the information is up-to-date.
  • Supporting and facilitating the organization in the use of latest social media such as twitter, facebook, youtube etc that are relevant in enhancing the organization’s mandate.
  • Take the lead in Resource mobilization for resources required to implement the Communication Programmes.
3. Qualifications, Skills and Experience for the Position
  • A Masters Degree in Development Communication, or any Mass Communication Degree. Additional relevant training will be an advantage.
  • At least 5 years experience working at regional or sub-regional level in the area of communication and Women’s Rights issues.
  • Expertise in creating traditional media content, web content, managing online community engagement and online campaigning.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage internal communications.
  • Excellent proven experience in working with media contacts interested in Women’s rights issues.
  • Experience in amplifying the voices of a wide range of stakeholders, including grassroots activists and high-profile figures.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with ability to simplify, summarize and communicate complex information, including presentation skills in both English and French.
  • Sound knowledge on general women’s rights issues in Africa.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing Journals.
  • Capacity to use the media to promote the regional campaigns on Women’s Rights.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in gender and development and/or women's human rights.
  • Demonstrated training and/or experience in participatory approaches to communications for development.
  • Demonstrated training and/or experience in print and audiovisual/broadcast media production.
  • Demonstrated training and/or experience in applications of new information and communications technologies.
  • Familiarity with Freedom of Information/Access to Information and ICT policy issues in Africa and globally.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate and work in both English and French.
  • Abilities of public speaking and giving presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in multi- cultural teams.

Programme Manager

This position offers possibility of gaining experience working for a lead African Feminist organisation in a very stimulating, multicultural and dynamic environment. 

The position will involve considerable travel within Africa and other parts of the world. 

This position reports to the Executive Director and manages the programme staff.


1. Purpose of the Position: The Programme Manager (PM) is responsible for ensuring the coordination of the programmes and projects of FEMNET and ensuring that the staff members take advantage of the synergies that enhance the effectiveness of the Network’s Programmes. 

The Programme Manager will contribute to the conceptualisation of the initiatives and projects to be undertaken under the three main Strategic Priority Areas – Communication, Capacity Building and Advocacy. 

The PM will be responsible for working closely with the Programmes team to development the annual work plan for the Network and oversee its implementation according to FEMNET’s contractual obligations and internal policies.

She will ensure that all reporting is done in a timely manner meeting the set standards of the Network. 

The position holder is also responsible to consult with the Executive Director on matters of staff and Executive Board development and ensure the implementation of the agreed plans and monitor progress. 

The Programme Manager will work closely with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to ensure that FEMNET has the resources required to meet the institutional and Programmes’ related obligations. 

The position holder will report to the Executive Director.

2. Responsibilities of the Position
  • Provide strategic oversight, technical and program management to ensure programs delivery, high quality outputs, with accuracy and consistency. 
  • Provide management advisory role on all aspects of program support, including leading the core program team 
  • Lead and Coordinate resource mobilisation through development of programme/project proposals, identifying and building mutually beneficial relationships with potential partners and ensure that Grant agreements are adhered to accordingly. 
  • Ensure effective and efficient financial and resource management of all programs.
  • Develop a clear plan and strategy for program management to ensure effective implementation. 
  • In collaboration with the Finance Manager, monitor program budgets and prepare budget modifications when necessary. 
  • Lead and manage program trends analysis for continuous improvement and growth. 
  • Assess level of risks associated with program implementation and suggest mitigation strategies. 
  • Manage staff development through performance based management and leadership. 
  • Work with the Executive Director and Programs Staff to develop periodic Strategic plan and its operational annual work plan. 
  • Lead Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning by ensure that all Program staff members prepare their quarterly and half year reports in line with the M& E framework of the organisation and then prepare a combined half and annual narrative reports for internal learning and sharing with different stakeholders including the Board and Members. 
  • Ensure the timely preparation of narrative and financial reports for on-going programmes / projects according to FEMNET’s contractual obligations in collaboration with the staff members responsible for on-going programmes/projects and the Finance Administrator; 
  • Support the development and maintenance of strategic relationship with key stakeholders in the women’s movement in Africa and globally, CSOs, UN Agencies, African Union Institutions and Organs, Governments and progressive Private Sectors. 
  • Be a member of the Management team Support the Executive Director in duties relating to the Board including preparing and Organizing the Board meetings 
  • Deputise and represent the Executive Director in her absence or as may be required. 
  • Represent FEMNET in different fora as may be agreed upon with the Executive Director
3. Qualifications, Skills and Experience for the Position
 
Education Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in relevant Social Science or Development Studies field.
  • Experience In-depth understanding and experiencing working on gender equality/women’s human rights and women and girls empowerment
  • Experience working at the African regional level and international levels including working with African Union Institutions/Organs and UN Bodies. 
  • Experience of at least 5 years in senior management positions 
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in successful resource mobilisation.
  • Demonstrated training and/or experience in programme / project management, including programme/project conceptualisation, development, resource mobilisation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation; 
  • Proven experience in managing and leading staff and team building. 
  • Feminist with contextual knowledge of the women’s rights situation on the continent and commitment to adhering to feminist principles and values which inform FEMNET’s core values. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of different teams

4. Remuneration:  

This position is a regional position and compensation is competitive with attractive benefits depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate and the FEMNET’s salary structure.
