We
are seeking a dynamic, creative and committed person to fill the position of
program manager in the health and rights program.
The
program advances health rights in the region and current areas of focus include
maternal health, harm reduction, palliative care, access to medicines, and
health rights of marginalized populations.
The
position reports to the OSIEA Director and the Open Society Foundation’s Public
Health Program and could be based in any of the offices in the region (Nairobi,
Kampala, Juba, and Dar es Salaam).
Overall job purpose: Responsible for the execution and advancement of the health and rights program in the Eastern Africa region. Provides leadership and management of grants as well as relationships with partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic
leadership: Provide a bold vision for innovative work that will add value
to the existing efforts in the region by identifying grant-making,
operational, and advocacy strategies to promote health rights in Eastern
Africa
- Management
and collaboration: Supervise and mentor staff and ensure a team leadership
approach that fosters information sharing, learning, and growth.
Coordinate and serve as the key focal point with the Public Health Program
for collaborative work in Eastern Africa to maximize results and impact.
- Implementation:
Grant making to civil society and other partners advancing health rights
strategies in the region.
- Capacity
building of health rights actors, particularly civil society. Conduct
relevant legal and policy analysis for internal and external audiences.
Write, edit or commission reports and advocacy documents on health rights
priorities.
Person Specifications
- Advanced
degree in a relevant field.
- Proven
commitment to the protection of human rights and substantive knowledge of
health rights issues in the Eastern Africa region.
- Experience
in and/or demonstrated commitment to strengthening civil society;
experience working with a range of civil society actors.
- Ten
years work experience, five years of which one should have served as a
Manager with an understanding of the principles and practices involved in
the effective management of a complex program.
- Extraordinary
initiative, creativity and capacity to think strategically.
- Ability
to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse array of people.
- Team
spirit and respectful working and decision-making style.
- Ability
to manage several simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong
organizational skills and close attention to detail.
- Integrity,
diplomacy and professionalism will be essential.
- Willingness
to travel as needed.
