Senior Communications Officer Job in Nairobi, Kenya - USAID

Seeking: Senior Communications Officer

(Contract to run through 22 March 2016 with a possibility of extension)

USAID Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) Program:The Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) program is funded by USAID and responds to the complex crisis that has evolved in Somalia.

The overall program goal is to mitigate conflict, promote stability and community cohesion, and strengthen citizens’ relationships with government officials.


TIS implements quick impact activities linked to longer-term stabilization goals. The TIS program is currently seeking a skilled, diplomatic, effective, and highly motivated Senior Communications Officer.

As our Senior Communications Officer you will be responsible for handling the program’s information and communication needs and programming. In high-profile, high-pressure environments, quick results reporting is expected.

In addition to compiling appropriate reporting on program status and impact, including regular reports, success stories, press releases, and ad hoc reports on how the program responds to particular issues, s/he will inform field office programming with regard to media, communications and information activities.

This position will be based in Nairobi with frequent travel to Somalia.

Qualifications:
  • University degree in Mass Communication, English Language/Literature or its equivalent with a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience in international development, media, communication, and impact report writing.
OR
  • Diploma and a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in the field of international development, specifically in media and communications.
  • Previous experience working for an international NGO or donor funded implementing partner required
  • Proven work experience in political journalism. Ability to conduct political analysis is required. Sound understanding of the political context of Somalia strongly preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate information coming in from various regions of Somalia and synthesize the information into weekly and quarterly donor reports.
  • Experience writing snapshots, donor reports, success stories, interviewing and photography.
  • Previous experience managing field staff preferred.
  • Experience in training and capacity building of field staff in communications, media and writing preferred.
  • Familiar with activity and grant reporting methods and systems.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent experience with deadline-driven writing and editing.
  • Fluency in English language speaking and writing required
  • Fluency in Somali language speaking and writing strongly preferred.
