Summary: Our client is a mid-size international organisation that manages the grant-giving programmes of charitable entities by providing strategic advice on programmes and offers them a full array of grant management services.    
 


Job Purpose: The Program Manager will be expected to provide intellectual leadership in the field of education in and across the Eastern, Central and Southern regions of Africa and to work closely with Program Officers in Africa and throughout the Foundation whose work relates to the central mission of the portfolio, including colleagues in other offices to advance the Foundation’s worldwide agenda and goals in the field of Education and Learning.  

The Program Manager is also expected to collaborate broadly with civil society, scholars and practitioners, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other donors on issues of common program concern. 

The candidate should have a track record in promoting effective communication of project results; and developing learning strategies related to the achievement of the portfolio’s goals. 

Understanding and experience in grant-making is a plus.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
 
Program Development
  • Assists with the development of the Education program strategy, goals and objectives
  • Translates program strategy into detailed operational plans
  • Assists with the implementation of the program and its operational plans
  • Develops proposals to test innovative approaches and builds on those approaches to drive additional impact
  • Assists with mapping and in other aspects of program development
  • Fosters teamwork and communication among staff and across organizational boundaries
  • Analyses program allocations and grants and shares analysis internally and externally
Research & Development Grants
  • Prepares program and grant allocation documentation for thematic committee deliberation
  • Executes research and development grants in close cooperation with the regional director and grant managers
  • Identifies grant possibilities with potential to advance the program’s strategies
  • Analyses grantee reports and updates
  • Measures, monitors and evaluates impact of the grants in Africa and contributes to the global education portfolio
  • Contributes to the regional and global Education Practice with lessons learned and best practices
Building Relationships
  • Builds internal and external  relationships and networks to ensure program success
  • Gathers information from external partners, in close collaboration with global and regional staff,  in order to inform the development and implementation of programs
  • Develops strategic partnerships, in close cooperation with global  and regional staff, with think tanks, academia, knowledge networks and other relevant entities
  • Assists in the establishment and management of  collaborative relationships with grantees
Person Specification 
 
Education, Knowledge / Skills and Experience 
 
Education
  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Specialist content knowledge in program area is an advantage
Experience
  • Demonstrated track record in education (social change) programming in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa
  • 5+ years in fields relevant to assigned responsibilities. Preference for significant relevant work experience (8+ years) with strong networks and contacts, as well as a broad background with deep comprehensive understanding of program design and development, systems, networking and community change
  • Evidence of effective work beyond areas of relevant field of practice and technical skills in Education or another of the core programming areas (education, social care, faith-based programming and society – civil, equity, gender, etc.) that support the goal area/regional strategy are an advantage
