Call for Expression of Interest (EOI) to
 develop a Strategic Plan for Mburugu Dairy Farmers  Cooperative Society in Embu
 
1. Background information: Norwegian Church Aid has worked in Kenya since 1984. Currently the Kenya Country Programme has Climate Justice and Gender Justice as its prioritized areas. 

The Climate Justice component focuses on climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation while the Gender Justice component focusses on gender-based violence and women in governance, with gender mainstreaming as a cross-cutting concern.
 

2. About NCA Embu Project: The focus area of Norwegian Church Aid in Embu is River Kapingazi ecosystem. 

In order to address the climate risks and vulnerabilities, Norwegian Church Aid has been working with groups of farmers and schools to initiate climate change adaptation and mitigation projects. 

The focus has been on the following:
  • Promote Climate Adaptive agricultural practices that improve productivity, soil fertility and are resilient to climate change
  • Enhance water catchment and riparian area protection through strengthening of local institutions to sustainably manage natural resources including protection of Mt. Kenya as a water tower
  • Livelihood enhancement through diversification of livelihood sources to reduce over dependence on tea production
  • Enhance rainwater harvesting and use among vulnerable households and schools through roof, and surface runoff water harvesting and storage for domestic and agricultural use
  • Capacity building through activities such as training, exposure tours and establishment of demonstration farms
  • Mitigating deforestation and land degradation through promoting sustainable supply of renewable energy through support to vulnerable households and schools to meet their energy needs 
From the initial mobilization of farmers, NCA facilitated the formation of Mburugu Farmers’ Dairy Cooperative Society. 

The Society now has a membership of over 500 dairy farmers producing over 3,000 litres of milk daily and has received support from the government to construct a milk cooling plant.

3. Scope and Objectives of the Work
 
As part of strengthening the capacity of Mburugu Farmers’ Cooperative Society, NCA would like to support the development of Strategic Plan for the Society. 

The objective of the work is to develop a five year strategic plan complete with financial projections. 

The work will entail the following:
 
a) Facilitate a consultative strategic planning workshop to collect information and identify the strategic direction for the society from the Board and other stakeholders
 
b) Review available relevant information for use in development of the strategic plan
 
c) Develop a five year strategic plan for Mburugu Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society complete with financial projections and operational plans
 
d) Present the draft strategic plan for validation by the stakeholders
 
e) Consolidate feedback from stakeholders and finalize the Strategic Plan
 
4. Deliverables
 
a) Strategic planning workshop report
 
b) Draft 5-year Strategic Plan for Mburugu Farmers’ Cooperative Society
 
c) Report of validation meeting with feedback from stakeholders
 
d) Final draft of the Strategic plan complete with financial projections and operational plans
 
5. Procedure for application
 
NCA is seeking the services of a qualified and experienced consultant (either a qualified individual or a consulting firm) to develop the strategic plan for Mburugu Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) should indicate the following;
  • A brief description of your understanding of the TORs
  • The proposed methodology of carrying out the assignment
  • The amount of time that it will take to prepare and deliver on the work
  • Itemised cost of the deliverables
  • Cost of facilitation (fee) per day that will be paid to the consulting firm/person.
  • Qualifications and experience of the individual or technical team
Qualified consultants should submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) on or before Monday 12th October 2015 Close of Business (COB).

Call for Expression of Interest - TOR Training of Small Holder Coffee Farmers in Murang’a County on Village Community Bank (VICOBA) and Agri-Business
 
1. Background information
 
NCA Kenya has since 2006 been working with small-holder coffee farmers in Kenya towards their mobilisation and capacity building to improve their coffee-based livelihoods and enable their effective engagement with the sector especially in relation to advocacy. 


To achieve this, NCAK has been working in partnership with Building Eastern Africa Community Network (BEACON) and Kenya Smallholder Coffee Growers Association (KESCOGA).

KESCOGA has mobilized farmers and established a strong presence in five (5) coffee growing Counties. 

In addition, it has laso estbalished linkages with the Coffee Board of Kenya, Coffee Research Foundation and Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (KPCU).
 
In order to enhance sustainability of the coffee engagement work beyond NCA funding, NCA has developed a wider Coffee Exit and Sustainability Plan which focus on the following strategic outcomes:
 
a) Strengthen KESCOGA ongoing County level engagements and secure effective membership recruitment and institutional viability
 
b) Through capacity building in coffee husbandry and livelihoods diversification promote better returns to smallholder coffee growers
 
2. About the Project

NCA Kenya Received a grant from the NCA Global Economic Justice Programme to undertake a Pilot Project in partnership with Coffee Directorate, Murang’a County and KESCOGA. The intervention primarily focuses on the following:
 
a) Improved coffee productivity (quality and quantity) through implementation of Good Agricultural Practices and Good Management/Processing Practices
 
b) Refining and piloting KESCOGA Mashinani {Grassroots engagement} engagement structure in Muranga County as a model to be adopted in the upscale / roll-out to other Cooperatives / Coffee growing Counties
 
c) Livelihoods of smallholder coffee growers strengthened through diversification with a focus on Village Community Bank (VICOBA) and agri-business.

3. Purpose and Scope of work
 
In order to achieve the objective on strengthening the livelihoods of small holder coffee farmers, NCA will undertake a training of select ToTs and lead farmers (Farmer Facilitators) drawn from two coffee farmers’ cooperative societies in Muranga County on VICOBA and agri-business. 

The main objective is to provide trainees with knowledge and practical skills on how the VICOBA concept works. 

It is expected that after the training, the ToTs will have the capacity to establish VICOBA Groups targeting smallholder farmers.
 
The work will entail the following:

a) Development of training materials for distribution to participants (Handouts, presentations, VICOBA guides, including sourcing sample VOCOBA stationery and equipment for use during training)
 
b) Awareness creation on the model and mobilization of groups drawn from two pilot cooperative societies
 
c) Facilitate an intensive training for ToTs and Farmer Facilitators drawn from two pilot Cooperative Societies in Muranga County
 
d) Provide technical support and follow up the ToTs as they embark on establishing VICOBAs and businesses targeting smallholder coffee farmers in Muranga County
 
4. Deliverables
 
a) Training materials for distribution to participants prepared
b) Awareness created and groups mobilized with a report of the same
c) 10 (ToTs) and 60 FFS trained on the model and training reports developed
d) Mobilized and trained groups provided with
e) Produce a detailed report of the follow-up trainings
