About Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA): seeks qualified applicant for the position of a Field officer for the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Benefits Project. 


Wash Benefits is a 5 year project that is evaluating the combined impacts of water, hygiene, sanitation and nutrition interventions on the health of young children in Western Kenya. 
The Project is currently on its final year focuses on evaluating the health benefits of sanitation, hygiene, household water treatment and nutrition, using a large-scale, randomized evaluation that is taking place in Western province. 

We are currently seeking Field Officers to focus on behavior change communication activities of the WASH benefits project.
 
Overview: The Field Officer will be based in the Western region Bungoma County, and will be required to travel in the County. 

He/she will work closely with fellow Field Officers and with WASH Benefits Implementation management team, including, Field Managers and Research Associates (RA’s). 

The Field officer will spend approximately 90% of his/her time in the Field

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prompt arrival to work.
  • Completion of scheduled activities each day in a timely manner.
  • Interact with community members with the highest level of respect and understanding
  • On non-field days, conscientious performance of office work.
  • Maintaining high standard of professional integrity in all activities.
  • Successfully complete all tasks assigned by the WASH Benefits management team.
  • Work with IPAAs to understanding and mapping out areas of work
  • Ensure timely delivery of Interventions and IPAA supervision visits to assigned clusters/House holds
  • Be involved in delivery of behavior change communication messages to selected households
  • Collection of adverse events met while in the field
  • Provide regular progress reports of the field activities
  • Immediately bring up any issue that is likely to affect Wash Benefits study.
Qualifications:
 
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree, diploma in community development work, social sciences or any other relevant field
  • Background in Behavior Change Communication aspects
  • Fluent in Swahili and English, Luhya speaking will be an added advantage
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Experience with position responsibilities listed above

Project specifics: We invite qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Field Manager for a project that will compare learning outcomes in low cost private schools relative to other available options in the vicinity. 

There is tremendous growth and innovation in the low cost private school market and this project aims to use a randomized controlled trial to better understand the effectiveness of such schools relative to public school options.

The Principal Investigators for this project are Anthony Keats (Wesleyan University), Michael Kremer (Harvard University) Isaac Mbiti (University of Virginia) and Owen Ozier (World Bank). 

Innovations for Poverty Action is currently preparing for the census and baseline evaluation of this programme, with data collection to begin in October 2015.
 
Assistant Project Managers will play a central role in the study’s success and will gain valuable experience in leadership in the field, data collection and representing the study to various partners.

Through their work, Assistant Project Managers will oversee a team of field officers and supervise data collection; will work closely with the field coordinator to improve their own skills and those of their colleagues; will be responsible for daily logistics; and will represent the project in meetings with local chiefs, village elders and other partners.
 
Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
 
General
  • Arrive to work promptly and reliably, always setting an example for one’s colleagues.
  • Interact with community members with the highest level of integrity and understanding.
  • Collaborate with teammates to improve own skills and those of teammates.
  • Relay field costs to senior field manager and research associate for reimbursement.
  • Organize transport and ensure punctuality for all appointments.
  • Manage necessary HR affairs for enumerators.
Data Management
  • Supervise field officers conducting survey and provide feedback to senior field manager.
  • Assist in the development and translation of questionnaires.
  • Coordinating with senior field officers to schedule survey appointments.
  • Assist in the management of data collection activities: collecting data from senior field officers on a daily basis, and turning over data to Research Associate.
  • Supervise field officers responsible for survey backchecks, including selection of backcheck respondents and scheduling of backcheck surveys.
Qualifications:
 
Required
  • Supervisory and management experience related to field work and data collection.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in training staff to improve data collection efforts and their accuracy.
  • Demonstrated Excel abilities.
  • Mastery of English, and Swahili.
Desired
  • Bachelors’ degree or college diploma/certificate
  • Experience supervising data collection activities
  • Computer programming

We are seeking Field Officers to assist in data collection and in recruitment of eligible households. 

Census and Baseline data will be collected through various instruments including parent and pupil surveys, and child assessment tests. 

The Field Officer will work closely with fellow Field Officers, and with the management team. 

He/She will spend approximately 90% of his/her time in the field and 10% in the office. 

Work Duration: Successful applicants will initially be hired for one month on a casual basis.

Those who demonstrate consistent exceptional abilities and performance may be considered for a longer term placement with the same project.

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Arrive at work on time; 
  • Complete scheduled activities each day in a timely manner; 
  • Demonstrate integrity and understanding during interaction with community members and partner organization staff;
  • On non-field days, perform office duties with care (for instance translation work, which will be taught as needed); 
  • Assist in daily survey organization and storage;
  • Ensure data integrity is maintained at all times and minimize errors in data collection;
  • Administer household and pupil surveys;
  • Administer pupil assessment tests; 
  • Distribute vouchers and find eligible schools;
  • Provide the FM/AFMs with daily feedback regarding surveying activities
Qualifications:
 
Required 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili. 
  • Experience with data collection through household surveys, academic tests, exit interviews, focus groups or observations;
  • Ability to recognize when questions are difficult or unclear to subjects;
  • Good interpersonal skills; specifically good at interacting with children; 
  • Excellent note taking ability during interviews;
  • Comfortable with interviewing individuals within their homes; 
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills (mandatory);
  • Ability to comfortably work with groups and within groups. 
Desired: 
  • Bachelors’ degree or college diploma in social sciences and education; 
  • Past experience in data collection – show proof of this in application; 
  • Experience in data collection using Open Data Kit (ODK) / SurveyCTO; 
  • Experience working with an education-field project is an added advantage. 
  • Fluency in the local language

There is tremendous growth and innovation in the low cost private school market and this project aims to use a randomized controlled trial to better understand the effectiveness of such schools relative to public school options.

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Supervise a team of 10 field officers at a field station, manage their work, and ensure that they are all following IPA survey protocols; 
  • Managing data collection tablets, charging, passwords and custody; 
  • Distribute wages and communication allowance to field officers each morning, collect receipts and reconcile the funds to the Assistant Field Manager; 
  • Distribute respondent gifts to field officers; 
  • Verify that field officers have interviewed the right respondent; 
  • Uploading all data collected by various groups to the server; 
  • Track expenditures; back checking and editing activities of each team using tracking forms accurately and consistently, and give daily updates to the Associate Field Manager; 
  • Do frequent and random spot checking in the field in order to monitor Surveyors; 
  • Report consistent problems to the Senior Field Manager and Associate Field Manager; 
  • Promptly respond to contact from the Senior Field Manager, Associate Field Manager or other IPA staff; 
  • Perform other duties related to the project that may be assigned to him/her.
Qualifications: 
  • A diploma or University degree in Education, Economics, or any other related field; 
  • Minimum of 1-3 years working experience; 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English; 
  • Strong oral proficiency and basic grammatical knowledge of Kiswahili; 
  • Good knowledge of basic mathematical computations; 
  • Good interpersonal skills; specifically good at interacting with children; 
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision; 
  • Previous experience (at least one year) in any of these positions; 
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS word and excel 
  • Fluency in local language(desired)
