Vacancy: Research Assistant
Background:
 The “Maker Movement for maternal neonatal and child health (MNCH) Project harnesses the creativity of the global 'Maker' movement to equip MNCH practitioners with essential MNH equipment and parts that save lives by creating a network linking Makers and MNCH practitioners. 

It aims at addressing gaps in health service coverage through the creation of low-cost, high-quality, locally designed and produced alternatives to essential parts and equipment for MNH service delivery, using local skills and materials. 

Four (4) of shortlisted medical devices have been fabricated and will be undergoing clinical testing in Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Consultancy Objectives:
 The Research Assistant will provide core functions during the data collection process for clinical testing of the devices.

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Methodology
  • Abstract data from medical records and enter onto a computer in KNH.
  • Run daily and periodic data quality checks to ensure collection of high quality data.
  • Collect hospital and clinical data to facilitate clinical audit in KNH.
  • Identify patients meeting the study criteria within KNH.
  • Conduct interviews among health care providers at KNH.
  • Maintain the study database by ensuring regular cleaning and daily syncronisation of the data.
  • Report to the Principal Investigators on study progress and challenges
Timeline: August 2015 to December 2015

Deliverables / Expected Output
  • A database of patients meeting the study criteria that have been identified within study procedures and requirements
  • Collection of high quality data to facilitate clinical audit that meets quality assurance standards
  • Properly maintained study database and records of information obtained during research including safe keeping of health care provider completed interview transcripts
  • Monthly progress report on the study data collection process and clinical audit to be submitted to the Principal investigator
  • Preliminary data analysis outlining interpretation of findings, conclusions and discussions submitted to the Principal Investigator
  • Deliver on other study related tasks as allocated by the Research Coordinators
Remuneration: Agreed rates will be based on prevailing market competitive rates and value for money. In full consideration of the services performed by the consultant under the terms of contract, Concern Worldwide shall pay the consultant fees upon satisfactory completion of the assignment.

The Consultant(s) is not an employee of Concern Worldwide or its affiliates, thus no benefits or compensation are provided as part of this agreement.

Working Conditions:
 The Research Assistant will liaise with the Research Coordinator for this assignment.

Consultant’s Profile
  • A Degree in Medicine, Health, Research Methods, Applied Economics or relevant field. A KEN/KRN/KRCHN qualification is an added advantage.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in clinical data collection and management for research. Experience in data collection and entry for operational research using both quantitative and qualitative methods for a hospital based study is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with maternal and new born health care and essential care before and after birth/delivery.
  • Proven competency in ethical principles of research, statistical analysis and complex survey design and analysis
  • Excellent communication, analytical, planning and team skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computer packages and applications
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
