Vacancy Announcement: 3 Month Junior Researcher Assignment
to carry out a Field Assessment in Bungoma North

and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
HKI is known for sustainability,
reliability, efficiency and the highest level of technical expertise in
fighting and treating blindness and malnutrition.
To accomplish its work, HKI builds
the capacity of local government, civil society and private sector systems and
infrastructure, and promotes the development of sustained, large-scale programs
that deliver effective preventative and curative services for nutrition, eye
health and neglected tropical diseases.
The hallmark of the organization’s
work is its proven effectiveness in developing, testing and scaling-up health
interventions, and integrating them within government and community structures.
We are looking to recruit a junior
researcher for 3 months to carry out the following Scope of Work.
Scope of Work
- Literature review of HKI Enhanced Homestead
Food Production Model, and roll out of bio-fortified crops including
guidelines and evaluations.
- Literature review of relevant government
policies and strategies.
- Document the current process of introducing
iron fortified beans in to the local food system with specific reference
to the regulatory body (KEPHIS) and varietal testing (KALRO);
- Gather relevant nutrition and agricultural
data, e.g. production and marketing of key crops, demographic statistics,
nutrition statistics etc. For Bungoma North Sub County, if this is
not possible in Bungoma county.
- Desk review to identify current agriculture
projects that have a nutrition specific or sensitive component focusing on
Bungoma North.
- Landscape analysis of ministry and NGO activities
in the area of Bungoma North to assess possible linkages (i.e. village
banking, agriculture coops, IYCN, etc)
- Field visit to Bungoma North to validate data
from the desk research and gather additional information on.
- Current food consumption habits among rural
farming families;
- Current cash/consumption crop production
- Current awareness of OFSP;
- contact points for women farmers,
- current farming systems,
- existing stakeholders in nutrition and
agriculture
- Existing capacity of Department of Agriculture,
Ministry of Health including the CU’s to support an agriculture /
nutrition intervention.
- Local availability of planting material for
Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato and other ‘nutritious’ foods.
Requirements
- Post graduate student of Agriculture/
Agricultural Development/ Rural Development.
- Previous experience in field-based surveys and
analysis.
- Swahili speaker.
- Strong reference from tutor.
- High level of competency in written English.
- Good report writing skills
