Overview of Dig Deep: Dig Deep works with communities in rural Kenya to improve their access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). We achieve this through partnering with Kenyan NGOs, CBOs, schools and county governments to fund and facilitate the construction of WASH infrastructure and hygiene promotion activities.
 
We are a small, rapidly growing, international NGO with 6 staff supported by 300+ volunteers based in both Kenya and the UK.

Overview of the Programme Manager Role: The Programme Manager will work with Dig Deep’s Country Director to implement WASH programmes, predominantly in rural communities and schools in Narok and Bomet counties. The role will be based in Nairobi and will involve undertaking field work with partners and beneficiaries within Kenya.
 
The Programme Manager will be responsible for proactively managing field officers, working relationships with partner organisations and specific projects to achieve the following objectives to agreed time frames, budgets, quality, monitoring and evaluation standards.
 
Objective 1: Identification and selection of appropriate partner schools and communities
Activities:
  • Work with partners (national and local government, NGOs and CBOs) to identify schools and communities to take part in baseline assessment activities
  • Develop, coordinate and undertake baseline assessment activities (e.g. surveys, focus groups, structured interviews, mapping)
  • Use established criteria to select schools and communities with which to partner.
Objective 2: Implementation of Hygiene Promotion Activities
Activities:
  • Designing hygiene promotion content and activities for partner schools and communities.
  • Implementing hygiene promotion programmes in schools and within beneficiary communities.
  • Implementing CLTS in beneficiary communities.
  • Coordinating and undertaking hygiene promotion planning activities with WASH partners.
Objective 3: Implementation of WASH Infrastructure Construction
Activities:
  • Coordinating and undertaking infrastructure planning activities with partner schools and communities.
  • Formally agreeing infrastructure construction activities with partner schools and communities through drawing up and signing Memorandums of Understanding.
  • Using established tools and processes to design and draw up budgets for WASH infrastructure (rain water harvesting, shallow wells, boreholes, VIP latrines).
  • Facilitating community/school led tender process for selection of appropriate contractor(s) to undertake construction of WASH infrastructure.
  • Using established tools and processes to draw up and sign contracts of construction.
  • Coordinating and undertaking monitoring of construction to ensure WASH infrastructure is delivered on budget to contractually agreed standards. .
  • Design and implementation of operation and maintenance training for school and community WASH management committees.
Objective 4: Monitoring, Evaluating and Learning from Completed Projects
Activities:
  • Coordinating and undertaking end line assessment activities (e.g. surveys, focus groups, structured interviews, mapping).
  • Training partner communities and schools in use of monitoring tools and coordinating collection of the data gathered.
  • Hosting evaluation meetings with project stakeholders to assess the extent to which agreed objectives have been met, identify lessons learned and any ongoing support requirements necessary.
  • Writing evaluation and learning reports on projects and presenting the findings to partners (national and local government, NGOs and CBOs, donors) as appropriate.
  • Incorporating lessons learnt in to programme procedures.
Objective 5: Undertaking Specific Governance and Marketing Responsibilities
Activities:
  • Monthly project status reporting to Country Director.
  • Monthly charity marketing requirements (e.g. blog post, social media updates).
Qualifications
  • Degree in Water Engineering/Construction Engineering/Public Health with experience in water, sanitation, hygiene and health education projects with at least 2 years’ experience working in project management, preferably within a WASH context.
OR
  • Relevant degree with at least 3 years’ experience in project management, preferably in a WASH context.
Skills and Experience
 
Essential
  • Experience in WASH infrastructure technical design and monitoring construction
  • Experience in implementing hygiene promotion programmes and/or community led methodologies or similar
  • Experience in implementing Menstrual Hygiene Management programmes
  • Experience in implementing Operation and Management programmes
  • Experience of undertaking field work and communicating directly with beneficiaries in a rural context
  • Experience in implementing CLTS in rural context
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent influencing and negotiation skills
  • Experience in managing field staff
  • Experience in field work logistics
  • This person should have a strong understanding of project cycle management and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time (dependent on need) and to live in basic conditions when in the field
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Fluency in spoken Swahili
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders (local and international NGOs, local and national Government, beneficiaries, partners, suppliers etc.)
Preferred
  • Prior WASH experience or at least 2 years with a humanitarian organization carrying out development activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in proposal writing and donor reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and preparation of budgets for programming.
  • Fluency in spoken Maa
  • Fluency in spoken Kalengin
