AFEX wishes to recruit a competent, innovative and self-driven person to fill the following position:
 
Assistant Construction Manager
 
The successful candidate will be engaged in design, running, and managing construction projects. 

He/she shall assist the Construction Manager (CM) in planning, coordination, and control of construction projects from beginning to completion. 

He/ She will report to the CM and may supervise Site Managers.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
Planning:
  • Discussing and agreeing project specifications, objectives and timescales with CM.
  • Assisting CM with technical development of electrical, mechanical, plumbing and civil designs.
  • Developing the schedule of work and strategy for taking the project forward.
  • Developing Project Execution Plans
  • Developing Risk Assessments
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Contract interpretation and development
  • Working with Business Development Team putting together bids.
Executing:
  • Site surveying and liaison with other construction professionals before construction begins.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to budgets, timelines, and quality.
  • Coordinate procurement, logistics and operations with Construction Team.
  • Making safety inspections of the site when work is underway and ensuring regulations relating to health safety and the environment (HSE) are adhered to.
  • Coordinating and monitoring sub-contractors, ensuring they maintain high standards and adhere to QHSE procedures.
  • Oversee work; manage performance and development of Construction Site Manager.
Reporting:
  • Regular updating of schedule and writing of daily/weekly/monthly progress reports
  • Meeting or reporting to stakeholders, keeping them updated as required.
  • Using project management software packages to plan smooth workflows, keep track of people, manage supply, stock and use of material and monitor progress.
Working Safe:
  • Ensure that any work is done in line with AFEX’s Health and Safety guidelines.
Must be fully aware of:
  • The dangers and risks specific to trade.
  • Which PPE is appropriate for the tasks being undertaken
  • The correct methods of manual handling, and risks of lifting heavy loads.
  • The risks of working at heights
  • The risks of working in enclosed/confined spaces.
  • The fire risks and what action to take in the event of a fire.
  • When a Permit to Work if required for certain tasks.
  • When Lock out Tag out (LOTO) procedure must be followed.
Requirements:
  • A Bachelor’s in Civil engineering or Construction Management and Diploma in Project Management
  • 5 years’ experience in similar job, preferably working in remote areas.
  • Highly experienced in MS project, or similar scheduling software
  • High degree of professional integrity
  • Ability to work effectively in a team based, multi-cultural environment.
  • Capacity to deliver timely results, under pressure, with minimum supervision.
  • Flexibility to cover other aspects of construction program as directed by CM
  • Ability to solve problems, prioritise and show good communication skills.
  • Excellent MS and IT skills.
  • Working knowledge of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) an advantage.

Maintenance Supervisor - Field Based
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for accomplishing work requirements by orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, and coaching employees and supervising sub-contractors in the project

He/ She will be reporting to the Construction Manager

Key Responsibilities:
  • Meet construction work standards by following production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving operational problems; identifying work process improvements
  • Meet construction budget by preparing estimates; monitoring expenses; implementing cost-saving actions
  • Plan construction projects by studying blueprints; ordering and scheduling materials and equipment
  • Monitor construction projects by confirming instructions for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete, painting, and related trades; conducting inspections; issuing change orders; approving work
  • Approve construction work by conducting inspections
  • Prevent fines and interruptions by complying with, and enforcing, codes
  • Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing technical publications; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices.
  • Oversee day to day activities of the casual labourers.
  • Accomplish set tasks by working diligently and motivating labourers.
  • Ensure that all labourers work in a safe and secure manner following AFEX guidelines.
  • Manage and maintain tools and material inventory.
  • Bring any issues to the attention of the supervisor immediately
General Responsibilities:
  • To carryout routine preventative maintenance in line with job schedule and/or SOPs.
  • Ensure cost efficient use of department materials and equipment.
  • Work together with department staff and employees to provide an efficient maintenance service.
  • Communicate and coordinate with superiors to ensure safe and smooth running of camps with minimum disruption to client.
  • Keeping tools of trade secure and in good condition, reporting damages and losses immediately to supervisor.
  • Keeping adequate stock of essential maintenance spares and advising supervisor in good time when materials require reordering.
Working Safe:
  • Ensure that any work is done in line with AFEX’s Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Must always, as far as is practicable, work with a 'buddy' in case of an incident.
  • Must be aware of the dangers and risks specific to trade.
  • Must be aware of what PPE is appropriate for the tasks being undertaken.
  • Must be aware of the correct methods of manual handling, and risks of lifting heavy loads.
  • Must be aware of the risks of working at heights including work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs.
  • Must be aware of the risks of working in enclosed/confined spaces, including trenches and tanks.
  • Must be aware of the fire risks and what action to take in the event of a fire.
  • Must be aware of when a permit to work if required for certain tasks.
  • Must be aware of when Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedure must be followed.
  • Safely cordon off area of work from public before commencement of works.
Minimum Qualifications / Trade Specific Requirements:
  • A diploma in a relevant field
  • 3-5 years’ experience working on a similar role.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be available 24hrs for emergency call out
  • Able to work with power tools
  • Good at project management, planning and follow-up
  • Quality management keeping in mind that all work must be done with a focus on quality
  • Developing standards and Supply management
