Effective with the release of this position announcement, SADO will be recruiting applicants for the position of Senior Accountant to support its projects located in Somalia and throughout Horn Africa. The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. Travel to Somalia will be required at times.

General: The Social-life and Agricultural Development Organization (SADO) is a local non-governmental, non-profit making organization. SADO was established in 24th November 1994 by group of intellectuals, after the withdrawal of UNOSOM, UN agencies and International NGOs from Somalia.

SADO has its headquarters in Mogadishu, Banaadir Region of Southern Somalia but mainly operates in South/Central Somalia.

To effectively facilitate its work, SADO has a number of operational offices in both Kenya and Somalia that are necessary considering the challenges of its operational context.

SADO aims to stimulate the potential of the Somali people to change their own lives through a sustainable, integrated people centred development strategy. In this regard, SADO facilitates various viable development programs amongst the communities it serves.

Since 1996, SADO has seen a steady increase in the number of donor partners willing to support its work which is a sign of confidence on and or recognition of the value of its work.

The concept of a sustainable development has been a central theme in development strategies since the late 1990s. We endeavour to contribute towards enabling the target communities find solutions to their socio-economic challenges.

In this sense, we strive to see an improvement of the living standards of with concern for the long-term viability of various development programs and the health of the environment.

This is especially key in the Somalia context in which development is often misperceived and commonly seen as an outsider driven process.

SADO specifically, Serves individuals, families, groups and the poorest communities living in South and Central Somalia, drawing strength from our area of diversity, resource and experience Promotes innovative solutions while lobbying and advocating for better quality of life for the target Somali communities and in this regard monitors, documents and publishes any human rights abuses and violation in Somalia

Reduces human suffering due to avoidable problems/disasters

By and large there has been substantial increment in the degree of project effectiveness and greater impacts on the lives of the served communities. SADO is highly appreciated by these communities (and other stakeholders) for positively changing their lives.

The organization strives to facilitate lasting positive changes amongst beneficiary communities by through various strategies amongst them:
  1. Direct poverty eradication projects
  2. Promotion of good governance and democracy
  3. Strengthening the capacity of communities & community based organizations.
  4. Delivery of emergency relief to disaster stricken persons and delivery of development

SADO has to date successfully implemented various programs in the areas of Good Governance, Education, Food Security, Economic Empowerment, Water, Sanitation & Hygiene as well as delivery of Emergency Relief Aid.

In all these, aspects of ecological conservation, gender and HIV/AIDS have always been dealt with as cross-cutting themes. SADO is continuously engaged in efforts to improve its own organizational capability and has witnessed a significant growth on both its operational facilities and human resources capacity i.e. staff numbers and qualification.

There has also been a steady expansion in the scope of programs both sectorally as well as geographically by SADO indicating a growing capacity to the serve more beneficiaries.

This is combined with a greater depth of engagement with and understanding of their context. SADO
is enlisted as an active member of various networks, both international and regional that provide opportunities for peer learning, coordination and ensuring a critical mass.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Review financial information submitted from field offices in the South/Central Somalia checking for completeness, accuracy, and the sufficiency of supporting documentation.
  • Enter field offices financial data’s into SADO’s general ledger system (Quick-Books).
  • Assist with project mobilization and training efforts as needed.
  • Ensure field offices financial information conforms to SADO policies and procedures and donor requirements.
  • Ensure field offices are actively tracking outstanding advances, inventory, and other required schedules.
  • Assist HQ and Regional Operations staff with field compliance reviews.
  • Provide back-up to field offices in the event of extended absences of accounting staff or during unusual periods of high volume of workloads.
  • Checking through each client on a regular basis, ensuring accounts payable, receivable and bank reconciliations are kept to a high standard

  • Responsible for monthly accounting cycle.
  • Statutory Deductions & Withholding Tax experience.
  • Conversant with submissions of Returns online more specially VAT amongst others.
  • In Charge of Debtors, Creditors, General Ledger & Invoicing including Accounts Reconciliation’s.
  • Compile data and prepare a variety of reports.
  • Recommends actions to resolve discrepancies.
  • Generating profit and loss reports and trial balance and balance sheet reports

Education and Qualifications:
  • Qualified holder of CPA with at least five years post qualification experience;
  • A minimum of five years’ experience working on donor-funded projects preferably proven experience in financial reporting on USAID, ECHO, DFID or generally experience in working in NGOs.

Skills & Requirements:
  • Take charge, hands-on, independent performer, and proficient with spreadsheets, word processing, and Quick-Books software.
  • Developing and implementing financial systems, strategies, processes and controls that significantly improve P&L scenarios
  • Expert in establishing accounting functions, systems and best practices; cost-reduction, automation and tax strategies
  • The successful candidate must possess strong workflow management skills; flexibility; good interpersonal skills with ability to work cooperative, tactfully, and diplomatically with a culturally diverse group of people; ability to write clearly, accurately and concisely; presentation/training skills; strong organizational skills for managing and coordinating a variety of consistently competing priorities; attention to detail; team player.
  • Working knowledge of USAID requirements and some experience with other major funding agencies like UN
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel outside of Kenya.
