International Payroll & Tax Accountant Job in Kenya

Job Title: International Payroll & Tax Accountant

General Function: Perform a variety of accounting functions in preparation, distribution, and reporting of payroll, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

Balance weekly and/or monthly payroll ledger, research exception items, and take corrective action.

Reconcile all tax and unemployment liability accounts to the general ledger and investigate variances.

Assist with preparation of quarterly payroll tax reporting and research and resolve payroll/tax reporting issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the point person for communication with employees regarding international operational payroll process
  • Ensure compliance with international payroll wage reporting and payroll tax requirements by studying existing and emerging regulations in applicable countries and advising senior management on needed actions
  • Coordinate with senior management in developing and maintaining the company’s international payroll policies and processes
  • Ensure that systems and processes correctly compute and record time, earnings, employee benefits, fringe benefits, special deductions, mandated benefits, taxes, garnishments, and other items that affect net pay and/or company liability for all international employees
  • Ensure that all international wage payments and tax withholding payments are processed and deposited in a timely manner
  • Maintain frequent and regular interactions with cross-functional departments, senior company managers, and outsourced consultants to ensure effective processes and resolution of outstanding international issues
  • Back up senior payroll accountant with domestic payroll duties to include, but not limited to, bank reconciliation, variance reporting, relocation expenses, fringe benefits, auditing, tax filings and tax deposits for bi-weekly, multi-state, multi-company domestic payroll operation
  • Assist in the management of domestic payroll budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Work with department director in identifying areas for process improvement by analyzing and recommending improved workflows, processes, and procedures
  • Assist department director in preparation of ROI analyses and detailed financial schedules for proposed projects.Special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Reconcile employee income tax withholding
  • Understand state income tax requirements for resident and non-resident employment
  • Identify potential tax set up errors when employee work state and resident state are not the same
  • Ability to research state regulations to ensure compliance
  • Maintain unemployment rates in system
  • Reconcile unemployment rates with payroll tax vendor
  • Create and Run periodic payroll tax audits to ensure accurate tax reporting
  • Reconcile quarterly taxes between HRIS system and payroll tax vendor
  • Reconcile annual taxes between HRIS system and payroll tax vendor to audit W-2 files
  • Knowledge of Requirements for Local & International Taxes
  • Ensure payroll is processed with accuracy by deadlines
  • Audit Employee pay records to ensure HRIS system and Payroll System match.
  • Documents payroll processes and procedures
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and/or annual closing procedures as they relate to payroll.
  • Work with internal groups to maintain adherence to accounting guidelines as they relate to payroll.

Qualifications & Work Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance preferred
  • Experience with payroll tax responsibilities.
  • 5-7 years payroll/tax and accounting experience in a fast paced environment; mid to large size company preferred.
  • Previous experience with a multi-state, multi-site payroll.  International experience a plus. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office and HRIS experience required
  • Knowledge of Oracle a plus.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements as it relates to pay practices, i.e. local and & international tax regulations, fair labor standards is necessary.
  • Working and demonstrated knowledge of multi country payroll regulations
  • Ability to compare and analyze payroll reports to identify inconsistencies and errors
  • Familiarity with how Payroll correlates to Accounting and HR.
  • Prior experience with system conversions
