Project Intern – KMA / RHRA Project

With support from the Reproductive Health and Rights Alliance (RHRA), Kenya Medical Association (KMA) seeks to contribute to the reduction of the high maternal morbidity and mortality in Kenya through promoting the prevention and/or reduction of unintended pregnancies and by advocating for repeal or reform of laws and policies that restrict access to reproductive health and rights (RHR).

KMA plays a key role in supporting RHRA’s advocacy efforts by building the capacity of its membership to support the provision of quality RH services, creating awareness on the legal and policy framework on RHR and conducting research.

KMA seeks to recruit a Project Intern for its KMA/RHRA Advocacy Project who will report to the KMA/RHRA Focal Person and the Project Coordinator.

The position is available immediately. Key responsibilities will be as follows:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of the developed KMA/RHRA project work plan in accordance with specifications and funding limitations; oversee daily operations and coordinate activities of the project in close liaison with KMA and the PP Global Advocacy team; determine priorities.
  • Monitor project expenditures ensuring that budget allocations are adhered to;
  • Prepare and submit progress and financial reports as well as weekly updates to the Focal Person and PP Global Advocacy Team
  • Act as a communication liaison between KMA and PP Global Advocacy Team.
  • Identify key local, regional and international SRH forums/conferences for the KMA/RHRA team to attend and participate.
  • Identify, coordinate and document publicity strategies for KMA/RHRA events and activities
  • In collaboration with the KMA/RHRA team, assist in the development of SRH-related abstracts, publications and documentation of KMA /RHRA project achievements for dissemination.
  • Develop and compile KMA /RHRA promotional SRH literature for distribution; coordinate process from development through printing and distribution.
  • Build and maintain ongoing relationships and partnerships with the relevant national and county government agencies, partner NGOs and the media.
  • Perform any other tasks as may be assigned by the Supervisors.

Minimum Educational Background
  • University degree in social sciences, biomedical sciences, public health or related disciplines from a recognized university, preferably with a focus in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • Higher qualification will be an advantage

Relevant skills and experience
  • The intern should possess good research skills and knowledge of reproductive health.
  • Strong writing, interpersonal and communications skills are required.
  • IT skills are a definite asset (familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point).
  • Advocacy skills/experience at different levels
  • Interested in pursuing a career in reproductive health and rights
  • Willing to commit to the internship for six months of full time equivalent (40 working hours in a week).
  • The intern should have a strong command of the English language
  • Non-judgmental attitude and respectful to diversity and different needs and views of others.
  • The intern should possess good research skills and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights
