Programme Officer Job in Kenya

Organizational Context: Caritas Isiolo is the social development arm of the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo and has been in existence since the establishment of the first parish before it was curved from the Diocese of Meru in 1994.

Caritas Isiolo has a priority to work wherever the needs of people are urgent and unattended by others, and offers a human service to the communities through a wide range of peace building and advocacy activities, many of which center around formal and informal intervention needs.

Description: Peace Building Advocacy Programme Officer

This is a position based in Isiolo.

The holder will be actively involved in peace and advocacy program.

Duration: 1 year with possibility of extension

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Head of Programmes, take responsibility of the peace and advocacy program.

Key Responsibility Areas:
  • The PO will oversee the implementation of various CARITAS supported governance, advocacy activities in conformance with Caritas requirements.
  • Conduct community trainings on governance, peace building and advocacy issues in the diocese
  • Conduct workshops and builds capacity of community leaders to proactively engage in peaceful resolution of potential and ongoing conflicts in Isiolo County
  • Enhances analytical skills in supporting peace and reconciliation within communities in Caritas Isiolo.
  • Prevent conflicts to ensure peaceful correlation among communities sharing scarce resources.
  • Engage communities in ensuring communities use common resources peacefully and equitably.
  • Enhances community’s critical understanding about peace building and conflict resolution mechanisms.
  • Incorporates gender perspectives and enhance gender participation in peace and conflict resolution processes.
  • Enhances gender participation in peace and conflict resolution processes.
  • Work in close Collaboration with staff in other departments to ensure integration of peace and advocacy support as an integral part of the overall program the other staff in  the caritas programmes as peace and advocacy is an integral to all programmes
  • Represent Caritas in coordination and planning forums and sectoral meetings with government line ministries and other stakeholders
  • Working with Village Peace Committees to ensure youth are engaged in the peace process.
  • In liaison with field teams hold regular meeting to assess the progress against the set targets and advise, give recommendation on progress as per internal policies, donor regulations and project timelines

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social sciences with strong background in peace building and advocacy
  • At least three years practical working experience in Peace building, together with relevant professional experience among pastoral communities.
  • Work collaboratively with staff in other DRR, Health and Nutrition, Communication departments of Caritas Isiolo, and the Justice and Peace focal point of Caritas Isiolo.
  • Ability to work sensitively with a population of different ethnic and religious backgrounds and/or demonstrated experience and commitment to working with marginalized communities.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral) and Good knowledge of MS word/Office.
  • Flexibility and resilient to stress and ability to adapt to changing working environments
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and planning skills and monitoring and evaluation skills/experience.
  • Patience, perseverance, proactive, self motivated and ability to work in stressful environment

Good knowledge on Catholic social teachings of the Catholic Church
