Program Description:

The Research Care and Training Program (RCTP), is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW).

RCTP leads the Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, a comprehensive HIV prevention, care and treatment program working in over 140 clinics in Nyanza Province, Kenya.

RCTP is urgently seeking motivated, proactive individuals with requisite experience to fill the following vacancies for a project known as SEARCH (The Sustainable East Africa Research in Community Health) study.

SEARCH is a community cluster randomized trial in Uganda and Kenya of widespread early community wide antiretroviral therapy (ART) vs. standard of care, where primary endpoints will include both community health and community economic status.

We are conducting a household census in 12 communities and annual multi disease diagnostic health campaigns. We are also supporting ART Delivery through FACES Clinics.

Job Title: Tracker Counselor - Home Based HIV Testing & Counseling

(12 Positions)

Reports to: Tracking Coordinators
Duty Station: Suba/Mbita and Rongo/Uriri Districts
Duration: 3months

Job Summary:

Conduct of SEARCH study’s annual HBHTC in 12 communities of 10,000 persons in Nyanza, Kenya.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Conduct tracking; planning and mobilization of home based testing campaigns.
  • Conduct meetings and communication with the tracking team and local leaders and community units
  • Conducting tracking by locating households of non-post CHC participants through the use of GPS devices and home based counseling and testing activities in line with the protocols and SOPs with support from tracking and study coordinator.
  • Conduct a health, economic and educational interview, similar to the interview conducted during CHCs using tablet computers.
  • Participate in the ordering of supplies and equipment for home based counseling and testing with appropriate use of local resources when available
  • Other duties as assigned by Tracking Coordinator, Study coordinator or Study Principal Investigator

Key Requirements:
  • Diploma in Community Health, Social Work, Community Development, Counseling or any other related field.
  • Certificate in HTC-NASCOP Certified
  • Experience in conducting research will be an advantage
  • Experience in conducting HIV Testing and Counseling
  • Experience in conducting survey interviews and working in the community will be an advantage.
  • Competent with computer software applications including Microsoft office and internet based application
  • Must be keen and attentive to details and have ability to follow instructions and procedures properly. Excellent written and verbal communication in English, Kiswahili and Dholuo required.
  • Must be non-judgmental and flexible to mix with all cadres of people.
  • Applicants with valid motorcycle riding license more preferable
  • Must be flexible to work for long hours and at times over the weekends and

Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technologists

(3 Positions)

Reports to: SEARCH Laboratory Coordinator
Duty Station: Suba/Mbita and Rongo/Uriri
Duration: 3months

Job Summary:

Successful applicants will be responsible for running tests in the field laboratory station during the community health campaigns and processing samples in the mobile RNA laboratory station.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform SEARCH study specific assays: POC CD4 using PIMA™ analyzers, HIV rapid tests, Malaria RDTs, Sputum for AFB, and Blood glucose levels, Full haemogram and blood chemistries e.g. Liver function tests and renal function tests.
  • Sample collection and processing: Infant DBS and finger prick whole blood capillary blood for viral load RNA.
  • Adhering to Professional Code of Conduct and Research Ethics
  • Preparing Sample aliquots, archival and storage in the freezer works database
  • Performing maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory equipments
  • Laboratory Waste segregation and management
  • Developing and updating laboratory inventory and stock control cards
  • Ensure efficient chain of custody of all samples collected, laboratory study documents, results and perform tests as per the specific laboratory SOPs.
  • Projection on consumables and reagents, and re-ordering whenever due.
  • Any other duty as assigned by the laboratory coordinator

Key Requirements:
  • Diploma in Medical laboratory Technology from the Kenya Medical Training College or any elevant, recognized institution.
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB)
  • Current KMLTTB practicing license
  • Current and valid Motorcycle riding license would be an added advantage.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Laboratory Skills:
  • Good clinical and laboratory practices training (GCLP)
  • Phlebotomy :Finger prick capillary whole blood
  • Conduct rapid HIV antibody testing, Malaria RDT test, Blood sugar tests, Sputum for AFB and DBS sample collections

Job Title: Deputy ART Coordinator

Job Summary:

Coordination of ART delivery based on the SEARCH study protocol at health facilities in 12 study communities in Suba and Mbita, Kenya

Key Requirements:

Education
  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery must be registered or eligible to practice with the clinical medicine board.

Prior Experience Required:
  • At least one year experience with clinical research
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in HIV Clinical Care including anti retroviral
  • Prior leadership experience managing teams
  • Experience implementing and supervising research (public health or clinical studies)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Development of systems to ensure delivery of high quality HIV treatment services in the SEARCH health facilities according to the study protocol
  • Oversight of ART delivery, mentoring, training, site evaluation, community follow-up, commodity management, and monitoring and evaluation
  • Direct responsibility for implementation and oversight of HIV treatment at SEARCH health facilities according to the study protocol
  • Supervision of staff that support linkage from SEARCH community-based HIV counseling and testing to HIV care and treatment
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partners including the Ministry of Health, collaborators, and community units
  • Provide leadership development and capacity building
  • Submit monthly reports on ART delivery at study health facilities and regularly communicate with the Study Coordinator

Job Title: SEARCH Clinical officer- ART Delivery

Job Summary:

Provision of ART services based on the SEARCH study protocol at health facilities in the study communities in Suba.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Obtain consent/assent for study enrolment.
  • Conduct physical examination of study participants.
  • Assist in follow up of study participants.
  • Offer HIV counseling, care and support to study participants.
  • Provide pre/post test counseling and adherence counseling to participant.
  • Offer contraception counseling and provide contraceptive methods at the site.
  • Completing case report forms.
  • Assist in follow-up of laboratory results.
  • Perform accurate record keeping and check study forms for completeness and accuracy each day.
  • Schedule follow-up visits.
  • Respond to questions about the study posed by participants and the community.
  • Maintain a good relationship with the community and other clinic staff.
  • Develop an in depth understanding of the study’s goals and the logistics required to conduct the study
  • Report problems encountered to study supervisor and consult appropriately.
  • Attend meetings related to the study.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the study manager and designated supervisors

Key Requirements:

Education and Prior Work Experience Required:
  • Diploma in clinical medicine and must be registered by relevant body
  • At least one year experience with clinical research
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in HIV Clinical Care including anti retroviral
  • Experience implementing and supervising research (public health or clinical studies)
  • Working experience within a HIV care setting preferred.
