The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a regional non-profit policy think tank whose purpose is to facilitate the translation and utilization of research evidence to strengthen policy development and program effectiveness in Africa.

AFIDEP works to close the gaps between research, policy, and practice by synthesizing and repackaging research evidence, and proactively promoting research utilization by policy-makers and development practitioners at national and regional levels.

AFIDEP’s work focuses around three core thematic areas: Reproductive Health, Health Systems Strengthening; and Population Change and Sustainable Development.

AFIDEP seeks to recruit dynamic and competent professionals to develop and grow our work through the following positions.

Director of Research Translation and Programmes

This is a senior leadership position with professional accountabilities to AFIDEP partners, stakeholders and to internal functions.

The overall role will entail providing leadership in the development, management, coordination and growth for all AFIDEP’s programmes in an innovative approach.

The successful candidate should possess a PhD in Public Health, Demography, Economics, or related social science discipline with at least 8 years postdoctoral experience.

The candidate must be a renowned policy-oriented scholar with proven track record in peer reviewed publications; development and management of research, knowledge translation, and capacity building programmes; and have experience in conducting high level engagement with policy-makers and other development stakeholders.

Research Translation Scientist

This is a senior technical position with professional accountabilities to partners and technical functions in AFIDEP.

The overall role will entail providing leadership in developing and implementing knowledge translation and capacity building programmes and promoting use of the evidence in decision-making processes at national and regional levels.

The successful candidate should posses a PhD in Population Studies/Demography, Public Health, Policy Analysis, Health Economics, or Development Economics and at least 3 years professional postdoctoral experience.

The candidate should also have strong qualitative and quantitative research skills; have a track record in journal publications, and hands-on experience in synthesising and translating research evidence into outputs that can be easily used by policy makers and in policy engagement.

Research Translation Officer

This position mainly entails coordination and management of knowledge translation and capacity building programmes. 

The candidate should possess a Masters degree in Public Health, Population Studies, Economics or related social science, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience. 

The candidate should also have strong qualitative and quantitative research skills and have a track record in coordinating research programmes and partnerships and have hands-on experience in synthesising and translating research evidence into outputs that can be easily used by policy makers. 

Research / Data Analyst

This is a technical position whose primary role is to generate policy-oriented data analyses to illustrate policy scenarios that decision-makers should explore to accelerate development in Africa.

Apart from supporting the analytical needs of other technical staff, the candidate will also provide hands-on technical experience in data analysis to government officials and other partners.

The Candidate must have a Masters degree in applied statistics or related discipline with at least 5 years’ experience in conducting both micro and macro level data analyses.

The candidate should be proficient in using Statistical software such as SPSS, SAS or STATA and be well grounded in interpretation and translation of the results into concise outputs that policy-makers can use.

The candidate should also have good communication and writing skills, have demonstrable appreciation of the role of qualitative data in research, and have experience in policy engagement.

Executive Assistant

This position will have the overall responsibility of ensuring that the Executive Director’s (ED) office works and functions efficiently and effectively.

The role involves managing initiatives and projects that will provide comprehensive executive and administrative support to the Executive Director, while working with the AFIDEP staff.

The Candidate must possess Masters Degree and have at least 5 years experience in a similar position.

Those with a Bachelor’s degree but extensive experience will also be considered.

Administrative Assistant

This position will have the overall responsibility of providing effective administrative support to the AFIDEP office.

The role involves managing the AFIDEP office including the front office, supporting the organization of meetings and staff travel, and supporting procurements.

The Candidate must possess a relevant Bachelor’s Degree and have at least 3 years experience in a similar position.
