Duties & Responsibilities

The Translator will work in the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor, under the supervision of the Language Coordinator.

He or she will work in a demanding and high-pressure but rewarding environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • translate and self-revise documents from Kikuyu/Swahili into English, and possibly vice versa; such documents cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters;
  • proofread and cross-read the work of colleagues;
  • summarize written or audio/video material in Kikuyu/Swahili into English;
  • transcribe and quality control audio/video material;
  • provide telephone interpretation between Kikuyu/Swahili and English;
  • contribute to terminology and reference databases;
  • perform other tasks as required (including administrative and/or IT related tasks).

Essential Qualifications

Education: A university degree (from an accredited university or institution with a minimum three years of study) in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law or any other relevant subject;

Experience: Minimum experience of seven years in language services (five years with an advanced degree), preferably in an international organization;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Some specialization in topics dealt with by the Court, e.g. legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters;
  • Sound knowledge of relevant computer software, especially MS Office;
  • Proven ability to work effectively to deadlines;
  • An excellent eye for detail, style and usage;
  • Organizational and time management skills;
  • Openness to skills development.

Knowledge of languages:

Mother-tongue proficiency in Kikuyu and a near-native command of Swahili and English is essential. Knowledge of French or another Kenyan language may be considered an asset.
