BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity, which uses media and communications to help reduce poverty and support people to understand their rights.

We do this through partnering with civil society, media and others to produce creative programmes and other outputs which inform and engage audiences on key development issues.

We also strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

We focus on health, governance and rights, and resilience and humanitarian response.

BBC Media Action in Kenya seeks to fill the following positions:

Senior Producer

The Senior Producer holds day-to-day editorial responsibility for the output of Sema Kenya programme on TV, radio and the web, overseeing the delivery of episodes from conception to completion.

S/he will also plan the schedule, be responsible for the show’s content and conduct edits to ensure adherence to BBC editorial guidelines.

Required knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Minimum 5 year’s experience in broadcast journalism, preferably as Senior Broadcast Journalist or Producer
  • Demonstrable experience of line management responsibility
  • A thorough understanding and practical experience of the mechanics of television, radio and the web
  • A proven record as a (relevant) programme maker with the ability of generating content ideas, a creative approach to programme making, in-depth knowledge of established production techniques and a highly developed technical and editorial understanding of lighting and sound issues particularly as they relate to outside broadcasts
  • Acute awareness of audiences and their needs, and the ability to respond with original and viable production ideas
  • Understanding of communication in development
  • Strong track record of reconciling editorial aspiration with financial constraint, of planning and revising schedules and delivery of programmes on time
  • A broad understanding of Kenyan news and current affairs and the provisions of the new constitution
  • Extensive contacts amongst key influencers and others in Kenyan society
  • Evidence of interpersonal and communication skills strong enough to establish credibility with colleagues and to foster strong working relationships with a wide range of people inside and outside of the BBC
  • Proven ability to influence and resolve differences in professional opinions, particularly where conflict may exist
  • Relevant higher degree preferably in journalism or communications
  • Excellent scripting and narrative skills

Multimedia Producer

The Multimedia Producer will use their skill and creativity to bring a cross-platform project from start to finish.

With your creative flare, you will work in partnership with the communications manager to deliver projects adhering to the high quality assurance standards required of the BBC across a variety of platforms from print media to TV content.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • At least three years experience with an INGO in a similar role
  • A strong knowledge of current and developing platforms, technologies and tools, coupled with an understanding of how they can be used to communicate
  • Excellent IT and web publishing skills, and experience of digital content management and production software and integration data feeds from 3rd party sources to Websites (i.e. SMS, DB, etc.)
  • Web content management, graphic design, audio and visual capture and timeline based video editing software skills are essential
  • Be fully conversant with timeline based video editing software such as Adobe Premier
  • Experience with various forms of media, such as, video and audio editing, Web design, photography, information architecture, graphic arts and animation, scriptwriting and interactive media
  • Relevant higher education preferably in computer programming, multimedia or other relevant educational background
  • Strong understanding of Kenya, Kenyan governance issues and Kenyan media
  • Strong understanding of the role of media and communications in development
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills

Communications & Training Manager

The Communications and Training Manager will be responsible for guiding the execution of the communications approach for the BBC Media Action programmes in Kenya and Somalia.

This will involve the creation and distribution of content and materials to promote our work on radio, print, online, through PR events and during outreach activities to reach communities in hard-to-reach / media dark areas.

The role will be responsible for establishing key strategic relationships with NGOs, CBOs and CSOs to support the outreach work where required.

This role will also oversee the training component of the programme to introduce, develop and improve skills of BBC Media Action’s broadcasting partners.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • At least five years experience with an INGO in a similar role
  • Relevant higher education preferably in development studies, education, project/ business management, mass-communication or other relevant educational background.
  • Strong understanding of Kenya and Somalia media environment
  • Strong understanding of the role of media and communications in development
  • Experience of coordinating work though civil society partners
  • In addition, the ideal candidates should demonstrate:
  • Fluency in written and spoken Kiswahili and English
  • Knowledge of the aims and objectives of BBC Media Action
  • Knowledge of BBC Producer’s Guidelines, production hazards and Health & Safety regulations and legal issues relating to investigative journalism
  • Commitment to the aims and objectives of BBC Media Action
  • Willingness to travel throughout Kenya and Somalia as required
  • Ability to work with initiative and to tight deadlines
  • Strong computer literacy
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
