Underwriter - General Insurance

Job Role / Purpose

To provide accurate, timely, effective and efficient underwriting operations and decisions in line with risk assessments and business objectives

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that the rates and terms reflect the risk before acceptance
  • Provide quotations for Corporate, Sacco and diaspora clients
  • Sign  policy documents and endorsements
  • Issue refunds
  • Prepare monthly reports on underwriting and customer service
  • Mentor, coach and train junior underwriting staff to ensure all their work follows the guidelines
  • Attend to Customer enquiries and queries from alternative distribution channels
  • Advise line manager on any issue requiring their attention
  • To ensure policy persistency is at the agreed level through constant feedback to clients
  • To develop and support a responsive and robust customer service system and culture
  • To develop and support a modern, responsive and robust operations and back office system and strategy for alternative distribution
  • To Review and negotiate renewal terms at least one month before the renewal date of the policy
  • To Ensure proper and effective management of tasks for the underwriting assistants and underwriting clerks

Academic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Actuarial, Economics or Business related field
  • Professional Qualifications
  • At least 5 papers ACII or IIK Diploma
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • At least 5 years in underwriting exposure

Assistant Manager – Actuarial
Role/Job Description

  • Performing quarterly valuations and preparing presentations and reports explaining the implications to managers and directors including advice on their emerging risks and implications
  • Calculation of all insurance contract reserves
  • Analysing statistical data in order to determine rates for different risks in acceptance of proposals for new policies and products in conjunction with the underwriting department
  • Using modelling techniques and statistical concepts to determine probability and assess risks and give best estimates; implementing the actuarial control cycle
  • Monitoring risk within business positions to ensure excessive risks are not taken during the fast pace of business execution
  • Monitor the level of profitability and performance of new and existing products
  • Working with IT professionals to develop systems to ensure optimal business performance
  • Providing technical support to the marketing function as they obtain market intelligence by researching and identifying new products and new business areas and ideas
  • Supervising, mentoring and coaching staff under supervision
  • Supervise and drive all data management, clean up and consolidation, and champion data integrity
  • Guide and drive all statistical modeling to support statutory and non-statutory actuarial valuations and capital reserves
  • Monitor expense ratios and perform expense analyses
  • Provide analysis to support the application of appropriate reinsurance arrangements
  • Analysis of industry statistics and monitoring of key metrics including those supporting credit ratings
  • Ensuring compliance to IRA regulation
  • Provide statistical analysis and modeling for the risk management function
  • Drive the implementation of asset liability matching and modeling

Academic Qualification
  • Minimum BSc. Actuarial Science
  • Professional Qualification
  • Progress in Institute of Actuaries examinations – at least 10 papers completed including at least one ST and CA1
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • Total of at least 3 years working experience the insurance industry.
  • At least 1 years’ experience at a supervisory level
  • Experience in statistical modelling and actuarial software

Assistant Manager - Underwriting - General Business
Job Purpose

To assess and prudently underwrite business risks as per Company underwriting guidelines to deliver the desired loss ratio and profitability.

Duties & Responsibility 
  • Analyse the proposed risks and make decision to accept or reject
  • Determine the rates & terms to charge
  • Sign Policy Documents
  • Recommend Risk surveying to Underwriting Manager
  • Ensure risk survey recommendations are communicated in time and follow up implementation
  • Supervise a team of underwriters to ensure prudent underwriting and timely release of underwriting documents
  • Mentor, coach and train underwriting staff to increase their underwriting capacity
  • Ensure prepared documents are issued to Customers and / or Intermediary as per Service Charter
  • Ensure renewal notices are issued as per the Service Charter
  • Custodian of Company Security Documents – Motor Certificates, Yellow Cards and Collaterals collected from clients
  • Manage and ensure full accountability of motor certificates
  • Manage Policy Cancellation
  • Ensure compliance to the Company credit Policy by underwriters
  • Manage company records and ensure proper filing of client information both manual and electronic

Academic Qualifications
  • B.Com Insurance, Actuarial Science, Economics, Finance, Marketing , Business Administration or any other business related degree
  • Professional Qualifications
  • Completed AIIK or ACII
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • At least seven years underwriting or claims exposure in a busy office
