Vacancy Advertisement: Chairperson, Kitui County Education Board

Under the Kenya Constitution 2010, education is a shared function between the national and the county governments, where the latter are responsible for pre-primary education, village polytechnics, homecraft centres and childcare facilities whilst the former is responsible for education policy and standards, curricula, examinations, primary schools, special education institutions, secondary schools etc.

In the implementation of their respective functions, the two levels of government are however required by the Constitution to consult, cooperate and support each other, as necessary.

The Basic Education Act, 2013 provides for the establishment of a County Education Board in each county to be responsible for the coordination and monitoring of education and training in the county on behalf of the national government and the county government; among other functions that are outlined in section 18 of the Act.

In this regard, the National Government Ministry of Education Science and Technology through its County Education Office in Kitui and the County Government of Kitui Ministry of Basic Education, Training and Skills Development wishes to recruit a qualified and competent person for the position of Chairperson, Kitui County Education Board, as provided under sections 17(1) & (2), 18 (1) & (2) and 20 (1) and the second schedule of the Basic Education Act, 2013.

Requirements for the Post:
  • Be a citizen of Kenya
  • Be in possession of a first degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university
  • Be an eminent educationist with a distinguished carrier and performance track record of at least ten years
  • Be conversant with education trends and reforms in Kenya and the world at large
  • Ability to oversee the adaptation of education best practices from other counties and countries
  • Conversant and supportive of the Constitution as well as the Kenya devolution and education laws
  • Demonstrate a clear vision and strategy for improving education standards and performance in the County
  • Have a good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate leadership, passion and commitment for accomplishing the County’s education vision
  • Satisfy Chapter Six of the Constitution

NB: A relevant masters or other higher degree from a recognized university is an added advantage
