Project Title: Sustainable Environment and Community Development (SECODE II)

Position: Project Officer - Media and Communication

To be filled: Urgently 

Duration: Initial 1 year contract; renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.

Scope and Accountability

Work closely with colleagues across the organization to ensure that challenging project’s communications targets are met, and marketing of our work is effective to our target audiences, which creates new opportunities for partnerships and support.

Create and execute an innovative strategy and annual action plan for communications including SECODE’s annual report.

Develop information material for different audiences.

You will work across the Network to mobilize and align communications and media activities to engage supporters and attract funding.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build strong and active relationships with the media to increase SECODE’s media profile in the regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Increase scope and content from the field for SECODE’s external communications across all platforms including traditional media, social media, website and multi-media, to raise the profile of SECODE’s grassroots activities and impact.
  • Identify opportunities for increased media coverage of SECODE’s work in Kisumu and nationally.
  • Produce SECODE’s annual reports (written and photographs) as well as annual programme review documents and any other documentation from workshops, high level meetings as required.
  • Commission short films/documentaries on relevant issues, or for specific events and SECODE’s appeals, in conjunction with SECODE’s partner organizations.
  • Develop SECODE’s external Communications Guidelines and Policies and ensure their adoption across the organization.
  • Review and give oversight to all external SECODE’s communications, including articles, blogs, appeals, website and social media, and ensure compliance with SECODE’s project guidelines.
  • Where required edit reports, articles and proposals for clarity and conceptualize graphics that drive or support the written material.
  • Co-ordinate the production and publication of newsletters, brochures, magazines, communications calendar including daily twitter, daily Facebook, monthly e-newsletter, monthly reports, annual reports and weekly web-blogs.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Media or related field from a recognized university or a Bachelor’s degree with postgraduate diploma in journalism and mass communication
  • A Masters degree in the relevant field will be an added advantage.

Required Knowledge and Experience
  • Proven competence in writing, editing and production in the print, electronic and related media.
  • Conceptual understanding of climate change, project planning and management, sustainable urban environment and community development among other suitable competencies will be an asset.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to listen to people establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant professional experience, working in communications, media, at a national and/or regional level preferable in the NGO sector.
  • Competence in use of digital and social media tools.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Knowledge on and utmost sensitivity to gender issues.
  • Strong conceptual skills combined with a proven ability to write user-friendly documents addressing a variety of audiences.
