Project / Proposal Summary: 
 
In October 2012, MSI was awarded the Kenya Program Support Project. Under Support, MSI provides verification, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting for USAID/Kenya’s entire portfolio of projects country-wide.  

MSI will also gather information related to the media to assist USAID in assessing and evaluate its interventions in Kenya. 

MSI has developed a pilot approach for reaching a broader Kenyan population by moving to radio programming, and proactively reaching Kenyans in their native languages, using the media with which they are most comfortable.  

A pilot program is being created to work with six vernacular radio stations in Kenya, to train their journalists (and editors) on development reporting. 

The project will run for six months, in Kenya.

Position Summary:
 
This is a six-month position, based in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The Coordinator will be responsible for assisting MSI in the selection of the six stations participating in the pilot, working with and independently of Internews training the journalists and editors at the selected stations, monitoring and giving feedback on the reporting being done by the stations. 

The Coordinator will be the main liaison to the six stations for MSI, and will therefore be coordinating information flow to and from MSI to the pilot stations.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the reporting activities in the six stations
  • Interact regularly with Internews and MSI, as well as the six stations
  • Assist MSI in identifying appropriate radio stations to participate in the pilot
  • Assist Internews and MSI in developing training materials and agendas
  • Develop a work-plan for the radio pilot project
  • Assist MSI in the designing of the scope of work for the evaluation, as well as the SOW for the evaluation expert who will evaluate the pilot at the end of the six months
  • Travel to the radio stations as determined by MSI Communications and COP
  • Provide monthly reports on the project to MSI Communications staff, by 26th of each month
  • Provide final report on the project to MSI Communications staff, by the 26th of their sixth and final month of work
  • Other tasks as defined by the Chief of Party
Qualifications:
  • A degree, preferably advanced, in journalism or communications or international affairs
  • Minimum 7 years professional experience in journalism with a minimum of two years of radio journalism
  • East African national, fluent in Swahili and English, with minimum two years experience working     in journalism in Kenya
  • Experience working with international donors
  • Minimum one year experience working as a journalism trainer
  • Ability to travel within Kenya
