Description of Saferworld and Sudan programme

Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security.

We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others.

Saferworld has been working in Africa since 1997, with a primary focus upon East Africa and the Horn region. We have well-established programmes in Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and South Sudan.

In addition, Saferworld supports regional and international conflict prevention and security processes.

Saferworld headquarters are in London, with offices in Nairobi, Kampala and Juba.

Saferworld had previously done work in Sudan on civil society support for conflict prevention and on issues of small arms control.

More recently, we have been developing initial scoping and analysis work on conflict transformation issues in Sudan, on the premise that both Sudan and South Sudan need to address their conflict and security challenges if either country is to develop long-term peace and stability.

Job purpose:

The Project Coordinator will contribute to developing Saferworld’s Sudan programme, focusing on conducting analysis and scoping of the conflict transformation issues affecting the country and on building relationships with key international and national stakeholders working on these issues.

Key areas of responsibility:
  1. Lead in developing methodologies and systems for conducting on--going conflict analysis and sharing this with relevant actors
  2. Build and maintain effective relationships with potential allies and stakeholders and with relevant Saferworld staff regionally and in London
  3. Lead (with Project Manager) in developing Saferworld’s advocacy strategy and contribute to the development of the overall strategy for Saferworld’s Sudan programme
  4. Implement activities and monitor expenditure
  5. Contribute to developing options for further fundraising and reporting to existing funders
