KEMRI - RCTP Program
Program Description: The
Research Care and Training Program (RCTP) is a collaboration between Kenya
Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco
(UCSF) and University of Washington (UW).
The program is seeking motivated, pro-active individuals to fill
the following vacancies in the Partners Demonstration Study.
This is an open-label, pilot demonstration and evaluation
project of antiretroviral-based HIV-1 prevention among high-risk discordant
couples in heterosexual relationships, based at Lumumba Health Centre -
Kisumu.
Position: Clinical
Officer
1 Position
Vacancy No. CIS-018-03-13
Location: Kisumu,
Lumumba Health Centre
Key Requirements:
Education:
- Minimum:
Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery with current registration with
Clinical Officers Council of Kenya.
- Training
in Adult ART management
- Counseling
training is desirable such as VCT and CHCT
- Research
experience will be an added advantage
Prior Work Experience:
- At
least one year of experience preferably in a clinical research set up or
Comprehensive Care Centre (CCC).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability
to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in both English and
Kiswahili. Knowledge of Dholuo is an added advantage.
- Ability
to work in a clinically busy, resource-challenged, and demanding
environment
- Competency
in using computer software applications like Microsoft Office programs and
familiarity with web-based programs required.
- Having
GCP training and human subjects protection certification will be an added
advantage
- Good
listening and writing skills.
- Must
be flexible
- Previous
work experience in a research clinic is required
- Working
in Partners PrEP study will be an added advantage
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform
clinical assessment of participants, interpret laboratory results and
follow up Adverse Events.
- Carry
out medical examinations including gynecological exams and prescribe
medication as required to the Study participants
- Ensure
participants access to standard of care
- Completing
Case report forms
- Perform
phlebotomy
- Consent
and determine eligibility of study participants in the study
- Referral
and tracking of all HIV positive participants for HAART initiation
- Reports
to the Lead clinician
Position: Nurse
Counselor
1 Position

Location: Kisumu,
Lumumba Health Centre
Key Requirements:
Education:
- Minimum:
Diploma in Nursing (KRCHN/KRN) with current registration with Nursing
Officers Council of Kenya.
- Counseling
training in HCT, VCT or CHCT will be an added advantage
- Training
in reproductive health is required.
Prior Work Experience:
- At
least one year of experience preferably in a clinical research set up or
Comprehensive Care Centre (CCC).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability
to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in both English and
Kiswahili. Knowledge of Dholuo is an added advantage.
- Ability
to work in a clinically busy, resource-challenged, and demanding
environment
- Previous
work experience in a research clinic is required
- Working
in Partners PrEP study will be an added advantage
- Competency
in using computer software applications like Microsoft Office programs and
familiarity with web-based programs required.
- Provision
of family planning services
- Having
GCP training and human subjects protection certification will be an added
advantage
- Good
listening and writing skills.
- Must
be flexible
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Offer
HIV counseling, care and support to study participants.
- Provide
pre/post test counseling and adherence counseling.
- Collect
blood and other samples such as urine for the clinic procedures
- Offer
risk reduction counseling,
- Offer
contraception counseling and provide contraceptive methods at the site
- Completing
Case report forms
- Consent
study participants
- Perform
phlebotomy
- Reports
to the lead clinician
Position: Community
Outreach Worker
3 Positions

Location: Kisumu,
Lumumba Health Centre
Key Requirements:
Education
Minimum: Form IV certificate and certificate in Counseling,
Community Health, social work or any other relevant field.
Prior Work Experience
- At
least one year of experience preferably in a clinical research set up or
field work in a health related field/organization
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills
- Knowledge
of local traditions, language and community an advantage
- Ability
to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in both English and
Kiswahili and Dholuo
- Good
listening and writing skills.
- Must
be flexible
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Involved
in accelerated campaigns and mobilization of HIV discordant couples in the
region
- Participate
in communication with CBOs, VCTs and other stakeholders in terms of
referral of HIV discordant couples to the site- Lumumba
- Taking
locator information for study participants
- Tracing
of study participants
- Assist
in the referral process of study participants
- Documentation
and tracking of all community activities / events
- Reports
to the Outreach coordinator
- Previous
work experience in a research clinic is required
- Working
in Partners PrEP study will be an added advantage
