Manager - Tax

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Tax the job holder’s key
responsibilities will be to;
- Review
tax exposure points in the business on an ongoing basis to ensure the
company is not exposed to penalties for non compliance or
misinterpretation of legislation;
- Review
cost and revenue structures of Safaricom and proactively advice
areas on of tax savings
- Follow
up actively with legislative bodies i.e. KRA to ensure that new
legislation has no adverse impact on Safaricom and where possible on
Safaricom trading partners by taking an active role in advocacy in
telecommunication industry matters;
- Monitor
legislative tax incentives to ensure that Safaricom cash resources are not
unnecessarily constrained by payment of taxes which could otherwise have
been avoided;
- Provide
proper guidance to technical section on wording of forecast presented to
ministry of finance and how to link the same to invoices to ensure smooth
VAT remission procedure;
- Follow
up import duty payment process to ensure tax payments are accurately
worked out per the correct HS codes of goods imported, all import
documentation filed and payments made directly to customs from Safaricom’s
account.
- Ensure
that Monthly Tax returns are prepared accurately and submitted to KRA in
accordance within the stipulated dates;
- Handle
tax audits and ensure that audit issues are followed up and closed in a
timely manner.
- Ensure
that Tax planning and forecasting reports are prepared quarterly and
availed by 15th of the first month in the quarter and liaise closely with
forecasting section to provide the best estimate tax figures for senior
management usage;
- Prepare
tax computation for the purposes of final audited accounts and ensure that
input from external tax consultants is kept at a minimum and filling of
annual returns is done on time
- Ensure
monthly reporting schedules are prepared as per timetable.
The ideal candidate should possess the following skills and
competencies:
- Bachelor
degree from recognized university;
- Full
qualified Accountant with CPA (K)/ACCA/CIMA/ACA a must;
- 6
years accounting experience of which 3 years should be post qualification
experience in finance with specialization in one or two areas of financial
accounting i.e. fixed assets, stock accounting, revenue reporting, profit
and loss accounting;
- Experience
in tax planning and proactive management of tax issues
- Ability
to quickly implement new Tax legislation and correct advise of
accounting implications;
- Hands
on experience working with accounting Systems e.g. Sage, Oracle, SUN
system, Hyperion etc
- Strong
analytical skills and a keen attention to details;
- Self
driven, results oriented and an ability to work without supervision
