The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future.

ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Assistant to join a small team of professionals working on the Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (ReSAKSS) initiative. 

The objective of ReSAKSS is to provide data, information and knowledge to stakeholders in order to improve the formulation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of agricultural and rural development strategies in Africa. 

The successful candidate will work with the Eastern and Central Africa Node of ReSAKSS based at ILRI-Nairobi which is set up to serve the COMESA region in the implementation of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program (CAADP).

The Position: 

The research technician /data analyst will be responsible for all the data gathering/collection, collation, management and analysis for various studies undertaken by ReSAKSS and its collaborating partners.

Key responsibilities
  • Contribute to ReSAKSS’ analytical work based on regional priorities in agriculture and rural development. Areas of research may include regional trade analysis, food security research, agricultural investment analysis, agricultural investment modelling and other related areas
  • Contribution to the Monitoring and Evaluation of the CAADP indicators in the COMESA region: this activity will involve data base design and management and continuously updating the data.  Data update will involve collation of data from secondary sources and primary data collection as necessary.
  • Contributing to the capacity building component of ReSAKSS including organizing and implementing policy relevant training for ReSAKSS’ stakeholders.
  • Communication and Knowledge Management: will be responsible for web design and web content management. Will contribute to dissemination of ReSAKSS’ work, through preparation of knowledge products such as: presentations, working papers, policy briefs, technical reports, journal publications, conference papers, posters, and brochures.
  • Deal with routine data issues arising in the course of data handling
  • Contributing to the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops organized or co-organized by ReSAKSS and its partners.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Applied statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Agricultural Economics or related subjects from a recognized university and one year working experience in data management and analysis, or similar duties;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Applied statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Agricultural Economics and a minimum of three years’ experience in data management and analysis, or similar duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of at least one statistical analysis package (preferably STATA, R, SAS or SPSS);
  • Experience in data management and performing quality assurance procedures;
  • Good skills in designing/development and management of computer relational databases demonstrated by working experience in handling Microsoft access, SQL databases or related programmes; and
  • Skills in web design and content management, and basic knowledge of HTML.
Other qualifications
  • Experience with statistical models such as regression models and other forms of quantitative analysis, Knowledge and experience in agricultural and rural development issues in Sub Saharan Africa;
  • Ability to develop an in-depth understanding of study goals and its implementation;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional contacts, and to interact with national officials and experts, other researchers, international organizations, development partners, and other ReSAKSS’ stakeholders;
  • Ability to work under pressure, often to tight deadlines without compromising the quality of deliverables;
  • Ability to work in a team, with good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability and willingness to learn additional skills on the job;
  • Ability to prioritize  tasks and able to work with little or no supervision;
  • A willingness to travel frequently within and outside the COMESA region;
  • Strong English language skills.
  • Skills in information technology and a basic knowledge of French will be added advantages
Terms of Appointment: 

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only.  

The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. 

Job level and salary:
  

This position is job level 2C level 2 with a starting gross salary of KES 116,417 per month. 

The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances for ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff.

Project Management Specialist

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. 

ILRI is one of 15 centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). 

ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, and Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

The Position: 

This position would be part of the team developing, piloting, assessing the impact of, and scaling-up index-based livestock insurance IBLI products.  

A comprehensive pilot has already been commercially launched in Marsabit county of Northern  Kenya and Borana Zone of Southern Ethiopia.  

In executing its agenda, the IBLI project (www.ilri.org/ibli) works with an array of commercial, NGO, governmental, academic and donor partners.  

We seek a well-rounded, experienced individual within the team to play a central project management role: supporting implementation activities of the team; managing project budgets; contributing to project reporting; managing communication and publicity among others.

Responsibilities

1. Budget management and financial reporting:
  • Manage the project’s budget and resource allocation across staff, other human resources, activities and preparation of the necessary project financial reports.
  • Liaise externally with donors and internally with the Budget and Grants office, the Finance office and the Project Management Officer to ensure accurate and timely application of project finances and grants and the preparation of necessary financial reports.
2. Project reporting and implementation support:
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of project implementation processes and contribute to periodic evaluation of progress and the drawing of lessons learnt.
  • Support efficient and effective project implementation through the provision of systematic and timely information on implementation progress.
  • Contribute to the development of project reports for donors and other partners.
  • Support engagement with and coordination of partners to optimize leveraging partnership interest and contributions.
3. Communication:
  • Facilitate links with other communication functions at ILRI
  • Maintaining and updating the project website
  • Preparation of project briefs, blogs posts and other project publicity materials.
Requirements
  • A  Masters in Business Administration, Project Management or a relevant Social Studies (e.g., Economics, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension and Education) from a recognized University.
  • At least four years of progressive experience in project management and implementation of innovative projects.
  • Experience with training, extension provision and implementation of development projects at community level.
  • Previous experience in and demonstrated ability to maintain good relations with project partners and stakeholders.
  • Experience in budget management for donor funded projects
  • Knowledge of livestock and familiarity with arid lands issues
  • Good presentation and oral/written communication and skills
  • Creative and dynamic person who can operate both individually and as part of a team
Terms of Appointment

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, whose initial contract will be for a two (2) year term renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided within ILRI’s NRS scheme.

Job level and salary: 

This position is job Grade 3A Level 1 with a starting gross salary of 164,817 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
