Background
 
Partners for Health and Development in Africa (PHDA) is a non-governmental organization established by the University of Manitoba, Canada, with its permanent office located in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The mandate of PHDA is to promote health and economic development in Kenya and Africa, with the following primary objectives: to provide health services; to promote research into health issues which impact Africa; to promote development activities; to promote research into development issues which impact Africa; to provide educational opportunities to individuals in Africa; and to raise, mobilize and disburse funds and other resources in furtherance of its objectives.
 
Position Summary
 
The Chief Scientific Officer is responsible to the Board of Directors of the PHDA, and also has a direct reporting responsibility to the University of Manitoba Associate Vice-President (Partnerships).
 
The CSO shall work collaboratively with the Organization’s Chief Executive Officer to accomplish the Organization’s goals of promoting health and economic development in Kenya and Africa.

The CSO will have general responsibility for coordinating the organization’s research, development and service activities, and will also assume general responsibility for coordinating the organization’s fundraising efforts. 

Additional areas of responsibility will include Board of Directors-related administrative support, together with community and public relations activities focusing on building of partnerships with the scientific community, governmental agencies and other organizations. 

This position is envisioned as part-time, with the precise terms subject to negotiation.
 
Qualifications
  • PhD preferably in biology, microbiology or chemistry, and/or a medical degree.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in research, preferably in developing countries.
  • Significant experience with research and publication, grant writing and fundraising.
  • Minimum of two years experience engaging with government programs and/or policy in some professional capacity, preferably in issues surrounding health or education.
  • Strong computer experience, specifically for research, writing and scheduling activities.
  • Experience working with Board of Directors preferable.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience.
