Regional GIS Officer Job in Kenya

Regional GIS Officer
 
The Water & Habitat (WatHab) Regional Unit carries out various projects in Kenya in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society.

The WatHab Regional Unit is also supporting the neighbouring countries in coaching, producing thematic maps, doing specific missions and participating in the development of new ICRC GIS tools.

In the frame of its activities, the Regional Delegation in Nairobi is seeking for a skilled and highly motivated person to fill the Regional GIS (Geographic Information System) Officer’s position, based in Nairobi.

Responsibilities:
  • To produce maps to support the operational and reporting objectives of the delegation following ICRC GIS Guidelines;
  • Organize and maintain the geo-database of the delegation. Filing and storing of (geo-data & meta-data) following ICRC GIS guidelines;
  • To maintain Synergy Geographic Referential;
  • Report Geodatabase and map products to central HQ database following ICRC GIS Guidelines;
  • Support Delegation Staff in collecting Geo-data including ICRC Recipient places;
  • Regular Geoportal / GPS / GIS training;
  • Technical GIS Support to GIS officers in Region;
  • Regular GIS support missions (Sub-delegations, Offices, etc..) and to neighbouring countries;
  • To analyze and valorise internal and external data sources ;
  • Networking with external actors in order to upgrade quality and extend coverage of geo-data;
  • Search and disseminate map products (ICRC and external) internally;
  • Prepare and maintain full Geo-referential data for neighbouring countries and beyond if requested;
  • Regular Map production for neighbouring countries;
  • Reporting on GIS setup and Mission carried out;
  • Frequent contacts with GIS Support unit at the ICRC Headquarters regarding global development project;
  • Management of specific GIS projects in collaboration with the ICRC Headquarters in Geneva;
  • QSR and WPA Coordination responsibility.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Degree of Bachelor of Science in Surveying / Geomatics Engineering from a recognized university;
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as ICRC GIS Officer or in a similar function;
  • Proven geo-data management and map making skills with ESRI ArcGIS 10 software;
  • Good command of written and spoken English; Basic command of written and spoken French;
  • Capacity to integrate and implement ICRC policies and procedures;
  • Willingness of self-education in GIS and IT tools;
  • Good knowledge of common GIS & GPS tools and very good database management skills,
  • Strong Good knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools;
  • Practical working knowledge of visual basic, java, web-based mapping and any other relevant programming language is an asset.
Other Requirements:
  • Experience in humanitarian work;
  • Flexibility and willingness to carry out GIS support missions in neighbouring countries
  • Good report writing , good analysis and synthesis capacities;
  • Ability to train other in GIS skills;
  • Confirmed capacity to work independently;
  • Ability to integrate in a team and very high level of initiative;
