WASH Technician Job in Wajir South Kenya

Save the children in Kenya works in the North Eastern Province (Dadaab, Wajir and Mandera) with Programmes in Child Protection, Nutrition, Livelihoods and Health.

We are seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of WASH Technician to be based in Wajir South Office.

Job Purpose
 

In liaison with the WASH Manager, the WASH Engineer and the hygiene promotion teams, the WASH technician will be directly involved in the day to day field implementation of the proposed interventions aimed at Improving Water and Sanitation systems and promoting safe hygiene practices in the selected sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • To carry out a rapid WASH needs assessment to identify new needs and harmonise with the proposed WASH activities. 
  • To work closely with the WASH Manager and WASH Engineer and ministries of Public Works and Public Health and Sanitation to design the most appropriate water systems including storage, treatment and distribution for new systems or rehabilitation of existing systems as highlighted in the proposal.
  • To work closely with the WASH Manager and WASH Engineer to select, design and implement the most appropriate forms of sanitation system, in consultation with the ministries of public health and public works, which includes excreta disposal, refuse disposal, and drainage as highlighted in the proposal.
  • To provide close supervision of all construction works in the field.
  • Conduct field measurements and prepare and maintain detailed works reports on a regular basis or upon request from the line manager.
  • To liaise closely with the government line ministries throughout the planning, design and implementation stages of the Water and Sanitation activities.
  • Work closely with the SC program teams to integrate water and sanitation programming across all sectors.
  • Train and mentor communities on basic and effective usage and maintenance of water supply systems and sanitation facilities.
  • Work in close coordination with other members of project staff, relevant government line ministries and other organisations.
  • Participate in WASH coordination meetings
  • To consistently seek technical guidance from and provide feedback and report regularly to the WASH Engineer. 
  • As other duties as assigned by the line manager. 
Personal Specification
 
Essential
  • A minimum of a Higher National Diploma in any discipline relating to Water and Sanitation Engineering is the necessary educational requirement. A degree will be an added advantage.
  • At least two years’ practical experience in appropriate water supplies, sanitation and hygiene promotion in the NGO set up. It is desirable that some of this should have been in emergency relief programmes and/or in ASAL districts.
  • The ability to present concise reports, sometimes at short notice, reflecting the problems and possible solutions for particular situations.
  • Diplomacy, tact and administrative skills in order to work with people at managerial and, on occasions, government staffs. The post holder should also be at ease in working with local people.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach staff, Ministry of Health and community volunteers
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions
  • Prepared to live and work in an uncertain security environment
  • Ability and willingness to travel and stay in the field
  • Well developed interpersonal and team skills and proven ability to be flexible in demanding situations.
  • Good written and spoken English is essential. 
  • Sympathy with the aims and objectives of Save the Children.
Desirable
 
The post holder should have a good understanding of the public health needs of poor rural and urban communities and of appropriate ways of tackling them. 

He/she must be aware of and sensitive to the particular needs of women and children in this context.
