Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) Deputy Coordinator - Nairobi

The Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) is a 10-year-old network dedicated to ensuring that all people have access to safe, quality, relevant education in times of crisis and conflict.

INEE is currently seeking a Deputy Coordinator to be based in Nairobi, Kenya, to contribute to the effective functioning of the INEE-GIZ Pan-African Knowledge Hub by providing knowledge management and other program support.

The Pan-African Knowledge Hub is part of the “German BACKUP Initiative -- Education in Africa” (BACKUP Education) of GIZ, assisted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is implemented by INEE. The Knowledge Hub is based out of Nairobi and Africa-wide in scope.

The Deputy Coordinator will be a member of the INEE Secretariat, working with other members of the Secretariat – based in New York, Geneva and Paris – as needed and under the overall direction of the INEE Director based in New York.

The Deputy Coordinator will work closely with and be directly supervised by the Coordinator, based in Nairobi.

The work of the Pan-African Knowledge Hub is a development-policy task within the scope of the BACKUP Education being assisted by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.

All tasks of the Pan-African Knowledge Hub will be agreed upon with the manager of the BACKUP Education at GIZ.

The position is to begin immediately and to last through the end of the current project term of end of July 2013 with the possibility of an extension from that point.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in knowledge management or another relevant field (e.g. education, international development, international affairs, peace and conflict studies, etc.). Masters degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years progressive, directly relevant work experience in knowledge management.
  • Proven and demonstrable skills for coordination and facilitation including experience managing complex projects and deadlines involving different and multiple partners. Experience supporting networks is a plus.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing needs, and responsive to requests from partners and stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing, editing and formatting skills.
  • Strong understanding of education and international development in Africa including: education planning and system management (e.g. financing, coordination, monitoring, etc.); education’s role in peace, conflict and fragility; major actors (e.g. UN agencies, NGOs, donors, etc.) involved in education in Africa; etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of INEE.
  • Fluent (writing, reading and speaking) in English and French is required. Fluency in Portuguese is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel, also in countries affected by conflict and crisis.
