Inspiring story about paths to a dream career for graduates.

By Richard Branson

In 1967, when I quit high school at age 17, I knew what my next project would be: founding Student magazine. But I did not know what I wanted to do in the long term. The headmaster’s parting words to me were, ‘Congratulations, Branson, I predict that you will either go to prison or be a millionaire.’ I am not sure whether that could be classed as career advice or not, but it did give me the impetus to prove him wrong on the first point.

When I set up Student magazine, I wanted to work as a journalist; however we needed to keep the magazine afloat financially and soon I had to stop reporting and focus on production and financing instead. I stayed involved in the editorial side by landing some of our most important interviews, but for the most part, during Student’s early days I honed my skills at business, negotiating and management – all of which would later prove useful as we built the Virgin group.

You want good pay, you learn to negotiate well.

There is a sense of accomplishment with the getting of the first job. Often, it implies an end of many months, sometimes years, of searching for employment after graduation from college or university. By the time one gets invited for an interview, there will have been quite a number of job applications and follow ups.

With that in mind, and when faced with the task of negotiating the salary, it is easy to end up making wrong and miscalculated decisions. Many have accepted salaries beneath their worth, or at least the value of the job they are being recruited for. Generally, fresh job seekers tread carefully when it comes to asking for better salaries.

6 Mistakes to avoid when answering, ‘Where will you be in…….?’

What were your childhood fantasies? What did you want to be when you grow up? In our era, we used to adore those careers that were revered by the society. If anyone asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” You’d smile, and without batting an eye, answer doctor, pilot, teacher, or whatever profession had recently stirred your curiosity: Easy question, easy answer. That is till the day I entered the HR practice and realized that even a DJ can make more money than a doctor and pilot combined. All in all, let us go to the second part of answering the question in hand.

Like I said yesterday when an interviewer asks, “Where do you see yourself in five or more years?” a worthy answer is often hard to muster. Problem is, these days your whimsical desire to be an astronaut won’t be so well received. To prepare for this go-to question in the interviewer arsenal, you need to think about potential responses way before stepping foot in the recruiter’s office. And just like a resume, you’ll need to tailor your answer to the employer you’re interviewing with: For example don’t say you see yourself climbing the corporate ladder when interviewing with a small NGO.

Marketing yourself in the job hunting exercise: Be unique

Thousands of fresh graduates are looking for employment against limited opportunities. Why would an employer who is already overwhelmed with job applications select you over other candidates? Can you be distinguishable from the rest of the pack? Companies have long known the importance of making a name for their products and services to set themselves apart from their competitors. They brand and market themselves aggressively.

And just like those companies, individuals face competition every day, whether they are aware of it or not. This makes it essential for us all to think we must brand and market ourselves. Consider Heidi Klum, who although shorter than the standard model, has managed to take her career to heights higher than previously imaginable. She is now an actress, a television host and a fashion designer all rolled into one.
