Finance Director Job Vacancy in Kenya

The organization

Finlays is Kenya’s largest agricultural export group employing 22,000 people and annually exporting 400 million stems of flowers, 7 million kilos of vegetables, 26 million kilos of black tea and 3 million kilos of tea extract.

The organisation is geographically located in Nairobi, Naivasha, Kericho, Mt Kenya and Mombasa, together with 1,200 vegetable out growers throughout the country and 10,000 tea out growers in western Kenya.

The group has established itself as a reliable, responsible, innovative and sustainable producer with a deep knowledge and passion for its products.

The Location

Based in Nairobi, but with frequent travel to Kericho, Naivasha, Mt Kenya and periodically Mombasa.


The Position


Reporting directly to the Horticulture and Estates Managing Directors, the Finance Director will be responsible for leading best in class Finance, ICT and Procurement departments servicing the combined operations of the Kenya group.


Kenya’s 5 divisions are managed through a matrix structure and the jobholder will be required to support operating units with due regard to multiple management structures, providing sound business leadership with timely proactive decision making and advice.


Key Responsibilities
  • A key and integral member of the executive board providing analysis, insight and advice;
  • Providing management and leadership to the Finance, ICT and Procurement teams that currently exist within the organization, identifying opportunities for consolidation where appropriate;
  • Provision of timely, accurate and relevant financial information to support business monitoring and decision making, together with comprehensive forward budget, forecast and strategy analyses;
  • Strategically managing foreign exchange, tax, insurance and banking matters for the Kenya group;
  • A key focus on managing ‘return’ on ‘capital employed’, deploying strategies to maximize the former and minimize the latter;
  • Guiding procurement practices so as to achieve leverage from group convergence, international sourcing and overall value for money;
  • Ensuring exceptional ICT service delivery, together with provision of system maintenance and development that meet the demanding needs of the organization, especially in respect of ERP systems;
  • Support and monitoring (with the aid of internal audit) of a high quality control environment;
  • As an executive, supporting the achievement of the groups goals in health, safety and sustainability;
  • Chairmanship of the groups various provident and pension schemes managing >Ksh 1 billion of assets; and
  • Specific projects as requested or self initiated, particularly focusing on sustainable solutions.
Experience, Background and Qualities
  • Of critical importance, the candidate needs to be a self starter with high enthusiasm and an ability to engender support and respect from a broad and diverse base of management.
  • Excellent relationship management skills required;
  • A graduate and a qualified member of ICAEW/ICAS/ICPAK;
  • Minimum 5 years senior management experience and minimum 10 years finance experience; and
  • Prior experience in an African context would be advantageous.
