Declaration of Vacancies in the Offices of Members of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board

Pursuant to section 9(2) of the Vetting of Judges and Magistrates Act, 2011 as amended by the Vetting of Judges and Magistrates (Amendment) Act 2011, I, Mwai Kibaki, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Republic of Kenya, in consultation with the Prime Minister, declare vacancies in the offices of members of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board and invite applications from qualified persons for nomination for appointment to the offices.

To be qualified for appointment as a member, a person is required to -

(a) be the holder of a degree from a university recognised in Kenya;

(b) have at least fifteen years’ distinguished post-qualification experience in their field of study; and

(c) satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

A person is not eligible for appointment as a member if such person

(a) is a member of –

(i) Parliament; or
(ii) a local authority; or
(iii) the executive organ of a political party; or

(b) was serving as a judge or a magistrate in Kenya as of the 27th August, 2010.

Applications (together with certified copies of certificates and testimonials) should be submitted so as to be received on or before Thursday 2nd June, 2011.

An application should be submitted in a sealed envelope clearly marked “Application for Member of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board” and addressed to:

Those who had responded to the earlier announcement need not reapply.

The names of all applicants shall be published in the Kenya Gazette.
