Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA)-ILRI Hub, is a centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. The BecA-ILRI Hub is seeking an experienced project coordinator to lead and manage a new Australian funded USD10 million life science research and capacity building project in Africa.

The Project Coordinator reports to the BecA Hub Director and will manage implementation of this major new initiative. Management skills are an essential requirement and the ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing large scale research and development projects in similar research for development and/or not-for-profit environments.

We require an excellent manager, people person and relationship builder who has the ability to quickly establish credibility and hit the ground running. We are particularly interested in hearing from suitably qualified candidates from African countries, particularly women.

Job Purpose: The Project Coordinator will be expected to manage allocation of project resources and connect the project team to each other and to key stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

1. Facilitate communication and liaison
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with research collaborators
  • Facilitate project team internal communications.
  • Manage day to day interactions with partners and provide timely and appropriate information.
  • Develop appropriate communication channels with the general public
  • Oversee planning, structure, evaluation and reporting of major project meetings
2. Monitor milestones
  • Create, implement, monitor and revise work plans and timelines for project activities.
  • Project planning, review and evaluation
  • Coordinate formal reporting for all project components
3. Coordinate internal operations
  • Manage internal processes on behalf of project team
  • Ensure compliance to organizational policies
4. Manage project accounts
  • Review monthly financial accounts, forecasts projections and submit monthly financial reports.
  • Transfer funds to collaborators and consultants
  • Coordinate financial reporting
5. Support BecA-ILRI Hub Director
  • Manage day to day administration of the project in accordance to organizational policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Research project/ programme management experience supported by a Masters degree in business administration, science management or similar managerial disciplines.
  • Background in the life sciences sector is highly desirable
  • Experience in development and implementation of project monitoring and evaluation systems.
  • Experience in dealing with multiple stakeholders at regional and international level.
  • Evidence of ability to foster outcomes and impacts from research.
  • Experience in facilitating teamwork and collaborative cross disciplinary approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, budget preparation, organizational, planning, capacity development and Human resource management skills.
  • Interest in international agricultural and human nutrition research and development
  • Ability to work well as part of multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills with excellent written and spoken English.
  • Competence in data collection, management and/or analysis and MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently in a range of environments and situations
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya with extensive travel within the region and internationally.

Duration: 3 year appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
