ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency working in over 47 countries, taking sides with poor people to end poverty and injustice together.

Policy & Campaign Manager (Africa Region)
Contract Type: International terms and conditions on
Grade C (£30,545pa)

Purpose of Role:

To provide overall coordination of agreed International Campaigns at regional level (including integration of research, lobbying and coalition work in support of international campaigns) and support to national campaigns (HungerFREE campaigns) to ensure that desired change objectives are achieved.

This will include synergising thematic and country contributions; media strategy; key regional alliances; social movement building and popular mobilisation.

To ensure systematic communication between African affiliates/country programmes and the international policy and campaigns team so that efforts and priorities are aligned for greater combined impact

Person Specifications

Education/Qualifications
  • Essential: Minimum education at postgraduate (Masters or PhD) level.
  • Desirable: Membership of relevant professional institution
Experience - Essential
  • At least 10 years minimum working experience in the social development field
  • At least three years experience in leading pan-African or international advocacy and campaigns within the international NGO sector or a closely related field.
  • Proven success in developing an effective regional or international policy and campaigns strategy and leading and enabling others to deliver action plans and budgets to support the strategy.
  • In-depth understanding of programming issues and policy work at state, national and international levels
  • Understanding of gender issues in development and demonstrable commitment to promoting gender equity within the organisation and in policy work
Policy Officer – Economic Justice (Africa Region)
Contract Type: International terms and conditions
on Grade E (£23,867p.a)

Purpose of Role

To provide coordination and capacity building support to countries on National Development Strategies plans and activities (including potential campaigning work on extractives, development finance, social protection and tax justice).

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications
  • Minimum education at post-graduate level
Experience (Essential)
  • At least 7 years minimum working experience in the social development field
  • At least three years experience in leading on regional advocacy and campaigns on economic justice within the international NGO sector or a closely related field.
  • Proven success in developing an effective regional or international policy and campaigns strategy and leading and enabling others to deliver action plans and budgets to support the strategy.
  • Well-networked with a strong knowledge of regional development and socio-economic justice issues and movements.
  • Deep knowledge of and personal familiarity with policy processes and governmental and inter-governmental institutions at pan-African, global and sub-regional (EASA) levels, and understanding of the strategic interlinkages between all of these institutions and arenas.
  • Strength in policy analysis, lobbying and alliance building skills in the areas of national development strategies, extractives/natural resources, development finance and taxation.
  • In-depth understanding of programming issues and policy work at state, national and international levels
  • Understanding of gender issues in development and demonstrable commitment to promoting gender equity within the organisation and in policy work
International Communications Advisor, Africa
Contract Type: International terms and conditions
on Grade C (30,545 GBP)

Purpose of Role:

This is a key role that will support the transformation on communications and campaign practice in Country Programmes within Africa.

The successful candidate will provide a vital link between Nairobi and other media hubs, including London, and participate in global communications’ initiatives, such as identity development, digital communications projects, and emergency coordination.

The successful candidate will also provide consultancy and capability development to countries and international teams to raise the quality of our national and international communications strategies and thereby increase influence, build profile, and raise funds.

Person Specifications

Education/Qualifications
  • Essential: Minimum education at graduate level.
  • Desirable: Membership of relevant professional institution
Experience Essential
  • At least 7 years minimum working experience in the social development field at manager level or in a senior role for a leading communications agency or media house.
  • Provide consultancy and capability development services and technical advice to countries and international teams to raise the quality of our national and international communications outputs and thereby raise profile, influence and funds.
  • To support the creation and sharing of quality, relevant multimedia communications ‘Content’ to help raise ActionAid’s profile and influence through the delivery of effective communication nationally and internationally
  • Undertake communications work directly in response to big opportunities, emergency situations or reputational risks
  • Manage Communications strategies & plans for achievement of priority International campaign, fundraising, and programme objectives
  • Experience in media relations; brand and reputation management;
  • Experience in online – website development and digital communications
Skill/Abilities

We would expect the successful candidate to demonstrate the majority of these skills
  • Strategic thinking and planning skills and experience of producing, coordinating and implementing multimedia strategies for specific events/projects/issues and communication strategies
  • Capacity building experience including training, facilitating, coaching and mentoring
  • Experience of organisational development, the structuring teams, recruitment and staff development
  • Experience of working in an international environment, exceptional interpersonal skills to develop effective working relationships quickly with people from many different cultural backgrounds and preferably experience of working in communications in other countries
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, documentation and presentation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing
  • Excellent planning and prioritization skills
  • Proven track record in management at senior level in an international organisation, contributing to the overall leadership of an organisation as well as the motivation of technically skilled senior staff
  • Excellent campaigning and mobilising citizen engagement
  • Excellent publications development
  • Ability to lead on quality video and photography projects for the organisation.
