National Schools’ Essay and Art Competition 2010
Background
The United Nations and member countries including Kenya is this year (2010) celebrating the 20th anniversary of the International Day for Older Persons, (In 1991, UN designated the 1st of October as the International Day for Older Persons).
The theme for the year is “Older Persons and the Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
HelpAge Kenya, a national NGO championing for the rights of Older Persons has teamed up with the National Aids Control Council to implement a national programme for promotion of rights and entitlement of infected and affected Older Persons in Kenya funded under TOWA III.
The project is intended to inform, educate and involve children, youth and the general public on being responsive to issues and needs of Older Persons while bearing in mind the following facts:
·         Older Persons are entitled to equal protection and entitlements under International Human Rights and Humanitarian Laws
·         Evidence derived from the Kenya Aids Indicator Survey (KAIS, 2007), indicates that Older persons are also at risk of HIV infection yet they lack vital and accurate preventive messages and services.
·         Older Persons comprise 50% of carers of orphans, vulnerable children and bedridden AIDS patients.
·         Older Persons are vulnerable and easy target for rape, sexual abuse, stigma, discrimination and other forms of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and consequentially susceptible to HIV infection.
·         Female Older Persons comprise the bulk of widows who in most cases are whereby they are unable to access justice in case of disputes over land and property inheritance.
Art/Essay Competition Questions/Task:
I. For Secondary Schools’ entrants, the Essay/Art Topic is:
“Write an Essay (750-1000 words) and/or draw a picture describing the problems that infected and affected Older Persons encounter and suggest practical ways in which families, society and the government can promote their rights to HIV prevention”.
II. For Primary Schools’ Entrants, the Essay/Art Topic is; “Write an Essay (250—300 words) or draw a picture that explains how Older Persons are affected by HIV and AIDS”.
Eligibility Criteria and Entry Divisions
·         Upper Primary School: Standard 4 to 7
·         Secondary School: Form 1 to 3
Rules
·         The competition is open to all students within the categories (divisions stated).
·         Entries must be original and relevant to the theme-
·         Essays may not exceed 1000 words for secondary school entrants and 300 words for primary school entrants.
·         Entries that have won awards/prize in other competitions will be disqualified
·         Once submitted, no entries will be returned to the entrants.
·         Essays will be judged on content, originality and how the topic is conveyed to readers.
·         The decision of the judges will be final.
Deadline for Submission: 15th November 2010
Announcement of Winners: Names of the winners will be published in the Daily Nation on the 4th week of November 2010
Awards/Prizes
·         Trophies and Back to school vouchers worthy 10,000/=, 8,000/= and 6,000/- to students with winning entries in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
·         Books and Reference Material on Ageing and Older Persons worthy 10,000/=, 8,000/= and 6,000/= respectively for schools with winning entries in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
Winners Gala Ceremony
The winners will be awarded the prizes/awards on Wednesday, 1st December 2010 – World AIDS Day.
