Short Term Assignment for a Programme Assistant Democratic Governance Unit, UNDP Kenya

1. General Background

The Governance programme aims to enhance the capacities of key national and local level governance institutions, in response to UNDAF outcome 1 “Democratic Governance and Human Rights including Gender Equality Progressively Accelerated and Realized.

The Governance programme responds to the aspiration of entrenching democratic governance in Kenya and supports initiatives that improve efficiency, effectiveness, transparency, accountability and equity in delivery of public services.

The Governance programme seeks to contribute to a culture of respect and promotion of progressive realization of human rights by enhancing reforms in the public service for enhanced decentralized public service delivery.

It further aims to entrench inclusive, accountable and participatory development programming and policy formulation and implementation at the national and local level that promotes respect for the rule of law, citizens’ responsibility, constitutionalism, tolerance, access to justice and the realization of human rights.

UNDP will achieve the results above through the following three key programme areas, and in synergy with the various democratic governance reforms in the country.
  • Strengthening the Public Sector and Good Governance
  • Support to Constitutional, Institutional and Legal Reforms
  • Promoting Human Rights and Gender Equality
2. Objectives of the Assignment

UNDP seeks to recruit a Programme Assistant to work in the Democratic Governance Unit.

Scope of Work:
  • Support to the organisation of Governance COP Meeting to be held in October 2010 in Nairobi
  • Support to the organisation of the Regional Anti- Corruption Meeting to be held in October 2010
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to the CAMPS Secretariat in the Government of Kenya
  • Support to the AGR Ill on ‘Elections and the Management of Diversity in Africa’.
  • Administrative support to any other collaborations between UNDP Kenya and the Regional Service Centre
The Programme Assistant (PA) shall
  • Provide logistical support in organizing workshops, meetings, training and missions related to the above events
  • Provide support in managing the calendar and travel linked to the above events
  • Provide support to the communication and knowledge management activities for the above events
  • Support to financial management including ensuring liaison with vendors and suppliers
  • Support the Governance Team members in the planning and implementation of activities related to the above events
3. Duration of Assignment and Duty Station

The duration of the assignment will be for a period of 3 months from September 2010. The Programme Assistant shall be based in UNDP Kenya offices in Nairobi.
