World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) - Recruiting a Health Coordinator for the MDG Centre - MVP Sauri

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is supporting the implementation of the Millennium Villages Project (MVP).

The Millennium Villages Project employs a community-based integrated development approach to help lift rural communities out of the poverty trap that afflicts more than a billion people worldwide.

The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) is supported by Millennium Promise and the Earth Institute, non-profit organizations, whose vision is the eradication of extreme global poverty.

Millennium Promise's mission is to encourage individuals and organizations to join the fight against global poverty, disease, and hunger through an unprecedented campaign that draws on the support of all parts of society - individuals, businesses, charitable organizations, faith-based groups, governments - to ensure the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015 and the end of extreme poverty by 2025.

The MVP is also supported by The MDG Centre, East and Southern Africa. The Center focuses on policy support at the national level and provides advisory services to the MVP with an intention of scaling up MDG related activities to district and national levels.

The position
The MDG Centre is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of a Health Coordinator for the Sauri MVP.

The main role of the Health Coordinator will be to ensure that the appropriate health interventions are implemented at the village level.

The Health Coordinator to be based at Dertu Millenium Villages Project in Kisumu, Kenya The incumbent will report directly to the Team Leader MVP, and technically to the Regional Health Advisor at MDG Centre in Nairobi

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Health Coordinator will ensure that the appropriate health interventions are implemented at the village cluster level and that there is a collaboration and integration with other sectors such as infrastructure, education and communication.

He/she will look for and work with relevant partners and organizations in the health sector including the ministry of health to provide effective management of the health interventions.

These health interventions include maternal and child health, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, NTDs, SRH, primary health care, as well as general health promotion.

The overall goal of the position is to work with the communities and empower them towards realizing health related MDGs.

The Health Coordinator Will:

  • Work with MVP site Team Leader and MDG Health Systems Advisor to prepare annual health workplan and budget.
  • Implement approved annual health sector workplan
  • Periodically review the workplan in liaison with team leader, and MDG Health Systems Advisor
  • Together with MDG centre health advisors, develop intervention models and adaptations of interventions based on results of health data.
  • Review results of quarterly indicators and rapid SMS with cluster manager and MDG center's health advisor
  • Collaborate with Ministry of Health staff at district, facility and primary level to ensure effective and efficient delivery of health interventions.
  • Liaise with MVP site Team Leader and MDG Health Systems Advisor to prepare a strategy for government/MVP partnership on staffing secondment by government to MVP site
  • Coordinate and supervise activities of health facilitators to ensure effective delivery of health interventions and health strategy in general
  • Co-ordinate activities of CHW manager, health enumerators and data entry technicians
  • Collate sector reports and evidence-based trends derived from field data and disseminate this at both clinic and village level.
  • Facilitate trainings for clinic staff and Community Health v Workers.
  • Provide direct on-the-ground logistics and problem solving support to village health sector including procurement management and electronic patient records and other forms of informatics including rapid SMS.
Minimum qualifications and experience required for this position
  • Bachelor's Degree in health science, Master's Degree preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Community Health and Development or experience in working with village level committees or community-based organizations (CBOs).
  • Experience in public health preferred - particularly on the clinical level and in health administration.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • Staff management and personnel skills.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.
  • Solid and demonstrable Project coordination experience.
  • Strong leadership skills and a supportive management style.
  • Proven problem solving and organizational skills, flexibility and calm under pressure.
  • Experience in the health sector including familiarity with Ministry of Health procedures.
  • Fluency both in English and Kiswahili required.
