Position: Programmes & Communications Officer Closing Date: 2 July 2010 Location: Nairobi, with frequent travel to Somalia
The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical centre that supports and promotes non-violent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entails the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing preconditions for building peace.
LPI is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Programmes and Communications Officer to be responsible for Programme work in conflict transformation with a special emphasis on Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (PME&L) and Editing of the monthly newsletter “Horn of Africa Bulletin” with full responsibility for content, in partnership with regional organisations.

Education, Knowledge and Skills:

  • At least Masters Degree in International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, or other relevant field — or equivalent experience;
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in NGO, development or peace building work;
  • Proven ability in editing, including copy, substance and line editing;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills in English language;
  • Knowledge of the Horn of Africa conflict systems;
  • Knowledge in conflict transformation theory and practice;
  • Knowledge and experience in applying Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning tools;
  • Ability to organise and manage multiple assignments and projects with high-level efficiency;
  • Ability to think critically and to interpret and disseminate information to different types of audiences;
  • Resourceful, demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members;
  • Ability to build relationships, liaise and cooperate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders;
  • Experience in capacity-building, especially ability to train, mentor and share experiences with colleagues;
  • Experience in managing donor relations, including proposal development and reporting.
