Position: Laboratory Technologist
(2 positions)
Position Description: The laboratory technologist will be responsible for carrying out tests for diagnosis, determining eligibility, and monitoring safety of interventions for subjects participating in malarial clinical trials and other vaccine related initiatives involving clinical research.
Essential Requirements:
  • Must be a holder of a diploma in Medical Laboratory sciences from a recognized medical training institution.
  • Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologist & Technicians Board (KMLTTB)
  • At least 3 years experience in a busy clinical laboratory to include malaria microscopy.
  • Experience in a clinical research and clinical microbiology will be an added advantage.
  • Good phlebotomy skills
  • Basic computer skills
Desirable Qualities

  • A proof of validated competency in malaria microscopy including, smear preparation, staining, detection, speciation and enumeration of malaria parasites
  • Experience in clinical microbiology procedures to include but not limited to; culture and sensitivity, media preparation, automated blood cultures(BACTEC), bacterial antigen tests and CSF processing
  • Knowledge in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)
  • Competency in laboratory quality assurance procedures and laboratory safety
  • Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Flexibility in accepting work assignments outside normal working hours
  • Ability to work accurately under time constraints and pressure
  • Work night shift
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Performs several analyses to include but are not limited to; phlebotomy, performing complete blood counts (automated), biochemical tests, isolation and identification of pathogenic organisms(automated and manual), ELISA, flow cytometry and preparation and reading of malarial slides
  • Performs analyzer functional checks, calibration, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance
  • Ability to develop and execute SOPs and other laboratory protocols
  • Specimen collection processing, storage shipping to overseas labs and documenting chain of custody
  • Laboratory documentation, record keeping and inventory management
  • Performing QA/QC procedures to include external quality assessment
