The African Academy of Sciences - Executive Director Job in Kenya

Under the supervision of the Secretary-General and President of the African Academy of Sciences, the Executive Director will be expected to: provide leadership, propel the Academy strategic agenda and action, and fundraise for new programme within the approved SAA.

Key roles and Responsibility


A. Projects Management

  • Oversee the development of programmes work plans and budget;
  • Supervise and coordinate all AAS activities through review and analyses of progress reports, regular meetings with departmental officers and monitoring of their work;
  • Prepare periodic scientific and technical reports on project activities as well as annual reports to donors;
  • Oversee the management of grants and contracts awarded by AAS, ensure grant deliverables are met and programs are in compliance with contracted terms;

B. Fundraising

  • Prepare and implement comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet agreed funding programme implementation targets;
  • Serve as the principal liaison officer for the Academy and keep in contact with the scientific community and donor agencies on behalf of the Academy.
  • Strengthen existing links and maintain confidence with international funding institutions and donors, for the purpose of facilitating mobilization of the resources required for Academy programmes;
  • Develop and maintain high-level contacts with the Government in which AAS has its headquarters;
  • Work with Government agencies to obtain funding for new programs;
  • Assist the AAS Secretary General, Treasurer and the President in mobilizing funds to the Endowment Fund and overseeing the management of the established Fund.
  • Oversee the preparation of annual technical and financial report on the performance of the Endowment Fund and other funds to respective contributors, three months after the end of each financial year.

C. Membership Recruitment

  • In liaison with the Secretary General, coordinate activities related to the recruitment, nomination, evaluation and induction procedures of AAS Fellows, having regard to gender and regional equity;
  • Arrange for induction of new members every three years during the AAS General Assembly.

D. General Finance and Administration

  • Develop and implement policies and actions in consultation with departmental heads to enable AAS further its objectives through effective leadership and team building;
  • Provide guidance on the development of AAS Business Plan to enable the translation of broad objectives into specific activities;
  • Develop and implement management information systems for effective control over all AAS programmes. In addition, ensure that professional administrative systems and procedures are updated and maintained;
  • Oversee the recruitment and appointment of staff, their orientation and annual performance evaluation. Supervise;
  • Oversee Academy financial operations and production, printing, and distribution of Academy publications.

Qualifications and Remuneration

The right candidate will be an internationally recognized Scientist with proven achievements in Academic and Science Management. He must be a PhD-degree holder (or equivalent) for the past 15 years and must have held a high level leadership position in an Academic or Research Institution at Director or Chief Executive Level.

Long experience as Director of regional and research development institutions with fundraising experience will be an added advantage. The candidate must be a team leader who can motivate others to work hard and in harmony. An attractive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered.
