Health Officer – (Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology): East African Community Jobs

This is a non-established position supported by Donor Funds whose contract terms and conditions are limited to the availability of funds.

Health Officer – (Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology)

Grade: Professional Staff Category (P1 equivalent)
Reports to: Principal Health Officer (PHO)

Organ/Institution: EAC Secretariat
Duration of Contract: Three (3) Years.

Station: EAC Secretariat, Arusha – Tanzania

Main Purpose of the Job:

Coordinate the implementation of regional policies and strategies for the prevention and control of various transboundary human, animals and plant diseases and pests in the EAC Partner States;

Set mechanisms for transboundary human and zoonotic diseases surveillance and epidemiology for early warning of out breaks and response under the “One Health Initiative”.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Collect and collate data on transboundary human and zoonotic diseases patterns and trends among EAC Partner States under the “One Health Initiative”.
2. Initiate and coordinate cross-border human and zoonotic diseases interventions across the East African Community region.
3. Coordinate the strengthening of transboundary human and zoonotic diseases surveillance systems within Partner States.
4. Coordinate and facilitate the activities of EAC regional Technical Working Group (TWG) on the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
5. Coordinate the development, installation and management of EAC regional integrated eHealth database and its accompanying Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and software systems.
6. Ensuring the safety, integrity and consistency of EAC regional health data and related information.
7. Harmonization of EAC Partner States’ Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) reporting mechanisms and tools and procedures.
8. Generation of communicable and non-communicable human and zoonotic diseases surveillance reports.
9. Coordinate regular production and dissemination of the “East African Integrated Disease Surveillance Network (EAIDSNet)” electronic newsletter and epidemiological bulletin.
10. Coordinate regular production and dissemination of the “East African Journal of Health Research (EAJHR)”.
Qualifications and Experience:
• A Bachelor’s Degree in a Medical related field from a recognized University with post graduate qualification in Epidemiology and at least 5 years relevant working experience, 3 of which must be in disease surveillance.
Skills and Competencies:
• Computer skills, good interpersonal and communication skills, analytical and report writing skills.
