The Kenya Medical Research
Institute (KEMRI) in collaboration with the University of Washington (UW) is
conducting research studies in Kenya.
The KEMRI/UW research
collaboration aims to conduct interdisciplinary, setting-specific research
aimed at improving the lives of women and children in Kenya.
Specifically, our research
strives to understand various infectious diseases afflicting these populations
and testing interventions.
We are looking for staff who
will assist the Study Coordinator in implementing an upcoming clinical trial.
Study Laboratory Technologist
Job Group KMR/8
2 Positions
Location: Homa-Bay and Migori Counties.
Desired qualification, skills and experience
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technologist.
Be registered by the Kenya Medical Laboratory
Technologist and Technician Board
A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in
laboratory setting (clinical research preferred)
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Team player
Highly detail oriented
Flexible working schedule, depending on conditions.
Overtime/weekends if required.
Computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Skype,
email)
Able to multi-task
Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
Demonstrated track record working in a busy
laboratory
Research experience
Experience entering samples into laboratory
databases including but not limited to FreezerPro standard, REDCap, and KIDMs
preferred, but not required
Job Description:
Responsible for collecting (where applicable),
preparing, shipping, and tracking of all laboratory specimens.
Responsible for safely and correctly handling and
processing clinical specimens for subsequent testing and analysis. This will
include aliquoting clinical specimens, safely and accurately processing the
specimens while maintaining specimen integrity.
Participate in general laboratory maintenance, which
includes washing and autoclaving glassware, maintaining temperature logs/charts
of laboratory equipment and standardization of all the equipment of operation
in the research laboratory prior to any operations on the stated machine.
Ensure all specimens are labelled and logged in
appropriately
Ensure proper tracking and recording of all specimen
in the laboratory
Maintaining an inventory of study-related supplies
Participate and establish accurate, timely and
quality data entry discipline in the lab and also adhere to the data query
resolution SOP
Attend and participate in the study annual SOP
trainings and implement any approved changes in the relevant documents.
Assist the study team in editing and developing
research documents like protocol, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and case
report forms (CRFs).
In Liaison with the site leadership work with
Nairobi-based staff to obtain supplies and up to date study-related materials.
Assist with miscellaneous KEMRI/UW study activities
including data entry, data query response, weekly reporting.
Perform other duties that may be assigned to during
implementation of the study.
Ensure good working relationship in the working
environment with colleagues, MOH, other partners, patients and clients at
large.

Organization
Terms of Employment: The positions will be at a 100% FTE. It will be a
one (1)-year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a probation
period for the first 3 months.
Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade,
based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.
The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI salary scales
