Senior Legal
The
Officer is expected to provide legal advice to the business on trading matters,
ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
This
includes matters involving our clients, service providers, business partners,
and consultants, all aimed at safeguarding the organization’s interests and
mitigating legal risks.
This
role guides functional Heads to ensure adherence to the legal framework and
oversees legal issues managed by a panel of lawyers
Key Responsibilities
Functional Legal Services
Develop
and implement the legal framework (guidelines) for the business.
Provide
legal advice and support on all our products and services to mitigate risks and
handle litigations.
Champion
business ethics, compliance, and governance to safeguard the integrity of the
business.
Actively
coordinate and provide seamless support for legal matters handled by our legal
panel.
Lead
and inspire Legal Officers to deliver credible support services and ensure the
prompt execution of legal matters.
Stay
up-to-date on industry developments and best legal practices.
Conduct
market research to identify new trends in legal practice
Management Advisory:
Support
and prioritize managers’ requests while understanding business activities to
plan the necessary legal support.
Ensure
an effective approach to providing advice, support, and case management for all
legal services required by the organization, including updates on legal matters
and corrections.
Proactively
manage budgets and contracts related to legal services.
Represent
the business in court, tribunals, inquiries, etc., as needed.
Draft
or review commercial contracts to protect the organization’s interests within
the boundaries of the law.
Manage
the legal process for litigation, arbitration, and recovery matters, and supervise
the work of external counsel to safeguard the organization’s interests.
Internal Relations and
Supervisory Responsibilities
Provide
or coordinate advice and guidance on legal matters.
Develop
and coach the internal legal team to achieve the best results and value for the
business.
Supervise
the performance of Legal Officers on assigned tasks for completion within
agreed timelines and to achieve the best possible results.
Work
closely with other departments such as Collections, Branch Operations, Finance,
etc., to ensure that legal issues are promptly and appropriately addressed.
Participate
in and support the improvement of our products and services.
Requirements
Bachelor’s
Degree in Law from a recognized institution, with a postgraduate Diploma in Law
from the Kenya School of Law.
Advocate
of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practising certificate.
Minimum
of four (4) years of post-admission experience in a busy law firm or a
public/commercial entity.
Ability
to provide independent advice (both orally and in writing) to senior-level
management on highly technical matters.
Strong
conceptual, analytical, documentation, and presentation skills.
Good
interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and negotiate at different
levels.
Good
planning and organizational skills, along with excellent communication skills
necessary for interacting and negotiating with parties.
High
degree of integrity, dependability, and confidentiality, as well as the ability
to work under pressure.
