Senior ESG Officer (Environmental, Social & Governance) Job in Kenya

We currently have an exciting career opportunity for a Senior ESG Officer (Environmental, Social & Governance) within Jubilee Holdings. The position holder will report to the Group Chief Operating Officer and will be based at Head Office in Nairobi.

Role Purpose

The Senior ESG Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy that aligns with the company’s mission, vision, and values. The role will lead the organization in identifying, evaluating, and managing the environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities that are material to the company’s performance and reputation while guiding businesses to drive improving metrics across sustainability and ESG measures.

Main Responsibilities


  1. Strategy
  •  Lead and execute the Group’s Road to Net Zero project
  • Represent the Group in the different Forums: NZIA, UN, Regional associations
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive ESG strategy t: hat aligns with the Jubilee Group’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Drive product/service innovation, Introducing ESG oriented insurance and investment offer
  • Identify and evaluate the environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities that are material to the company’s performance and reputation.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs to mitigate identified risks and capitalize on identified opportunities.
  • Ensure that the company’s ESG performance is transparent, measurable, and reported timely and accurately
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including investors, customers, suppliers, and regulators, to develop and implement sustainable business practices.
  • Lead the organization in integrating ESG considerations into decision-making processes, including investment decisions and strategy development.
  • Convene internal ESG conversations to drive corporate strategy; produce recommendations on action, policy or behavior change; work with internal stakeholders to enact these recommendations and develop a cohesive narrative around them.
  • Keep abreast of the latest ESG trends, regulations, and best practices, and provide guidance and counsel to the Board of Directors, and senior management.
  1. 2Operations
  • Establishing a clear, prioritized activity roadmap that successfully delivers the Group’s ambitions, including changes in policies and/or processes, alignment with external benchmarks, and proactive engagement with rating agencies.
  • Coordinating regular ESG-related activities across the organization (e.g., annual integrated reports).
  • Partnering with Group ESG reporting office to ensure systematic and accurate collection and reporting of key KPIs, and to proactively identify new KPIs required to meet ESG requirements.
  • Develop external ESG reporting and work collaboratively all departments to drive program awareness and communicate program results.
  • Engaging with the broader ESG community to build partnerships and share best practices.
  • Working across the businesses to inform and educate, while ensuring that key stakeholders understand the role that they (or their teams) play in ESG.
  • Assisting in developing appropriate external communications regarding the company’s ESG strategy and progress.
  • Managing external resources to provide subject-matter expertise, where necessary.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and implement successful marketing, corporate communications, and PR strategies.
  • Act as a thought leader in ESG; Understanding current and future challenges within the industry and educating and prioritizing these issues with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Development, maintenance and execution of appropriate disclosure controls and procedures related to ESG; inclusion of key ESG disclosures in regulatory filings.
  • Develop and maintain an ESG dashboard for functional leaders and the executive team.
  • Manage ESG reporting to third parties as appropriate.
  1. Corporate Governance
  •  Ensuring that the company’s ESG performance is transparent, measurable, and reported in a timely and accurate manner. This includes developing and implementing reporting frameworks, such as GRI, SASB, and CDP, to ensure that the company’s ESG performance is clearly communicated to stakeholders
  • Leading the organization in integrating ESG considerations into decision-making processes, including investment decisions and strategy development. This includes working closely with the Board of Directors and senior management to ensure that ESG risks and opportunities are considered in all major business decisions.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including investors, customers, suppliers, and regulators, to develop and implement sustainable business practices. This includes engaging with stakeholders to understand their concerns and expectations and using this feedback to inform the company’s ESG strategy and performance.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest ESG trends, regulations, and best practices, and providing guidance and counsel to the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior management. This includes staying informed about changes in ESG regulations and best practices, and providing guidance and counsel to the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior management on how to respond to these changes.
  • Advising the Board of Directors on ESG matters and ensure the company’s compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This includes working closely with the legal and compliance teams to ensure that the company is compliant with all relevant laws and regulations related to ESG and advising the Board of Directors on any potential risks or liabilities.
  • Establishing and maintaining the company’s corporate governance framework, policies, and procedures that align with ESG principles. This includes creating a comprehensive corporate governance framework that incorporates ESG considerations and implementing policies and procedures that ensure that the company is adhering to these principles.
  1. Change Management
  •  Identifying and evaluating the environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities that are material to the company’s performance and reputation. This includes conducting a thorough assessment of the company’s ESG performance and identifying areas where changes need to be made.
  • Developing and implementing policies, procedures, and programs to mitigate identified risks and capitalize on identified opportunities. This includes creating action plans to address the identified risks and opportunities and implementing processes and systems to ensure that these plans are executed effectively.
  • Communicating the ESG strategy changes to internal and external stakeholders. This includes developing a communication plan to ensure that all stakeholders are informed about the company’s ESG strategy and the changes that are being made and using various channels to reach out to stakeholders.
  • Managing and leading the ESG change process within the organization. This includes working closely with the leadership team to establish a culture of continuous improvement and providing guidance and support to employees as they adapt to the changes.
  • Monitoring the implementation of ESG changes, identifying any obstacles that arise, and adjusting as needed to ensure that the changes are implemented successfully.
  • Continuously evaluating the effectiveness of the implemented ESG changes and adjusting the strategy accordingly to ensure the company’s ESG performance is on track and meets the standards of the industry and global regulations.

  • Building relevant departmental capacity to deliver on the ESG strategy by leading, guiding, directing, and evaluating the work of departmental members.
  • Fostering a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices and good corporate citizenship while maintaining a conducive work environment for attracting, retaining, and motivating employees.
  • Building the ESG team and ensure adequate succession planning in the department.

Qualifications

  • Masters in Strategy, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or any other Related fields.
  • Degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, or any other Related fields
  • ESG professional Qualification e.g., Sustainable Finance, or equivalent
  • Professional certifications such as GRI, SASB and CDP are a plus

Relevant Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience within ESG or CSR that includes driving corporate ESG/CSR initiatives that tie to strategic business objectives; 10 years of team leadership experience.
  • Experience building and executing an ESG program.
  • Strong understanding of ESG risks and opportunities, and the ability to identify and evaluate material issues.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective policies, procedures, and programs.
