Assistant Underwriting Manager – General Business

The Role

The jobholder will be responsible for the establishment, implementation and evaluation of business and strategic direction to deliver growth and underwriting profitable through proper selection, acceptance, training and ensuring compliance in Underwriting.  He or she will efficiently and effectively manage the underwriting team to ensure satisfactory underwriting standards are achieved profitably.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise to underwriting staff and marketing team
  • Reviewing the risks accepted in the organization to ensure they are within the set underwriting guidelines and are covered under the reinsurance programme
  • Issuing and approving quotations
  • Working closely with reinsurance to ensure proper reinsurance
  • Negotiating of reinsurance treaties, facultative and claims recoveries
  • Liaising with claims department on loss ratio, emerging trends and risk mitigation

  • Reviewing existing risks, recommending and implementing risk mitigation measures
  • Conducting performance appraisals, coaching, training and mentoring staff
  • Managing the entire underwriting processes.
  • Ensure department compliance with underwriting guidelines, reinsurance treaty, credit management policy and customer service benchmarks as per company service charter
  • Assist, advice and support marketing team in all marketing initiatives.
  • Provide input on product development and business innovation initiatives to ensure continuous review of products to meet changing market needs.
  • Engage intermediaries and business partners in order to grow the business
  • Managing the renewal process to archive the set performance level and turnaround times
  • Coordinating the underwriting activities including branches to ensure quality excellent customer service
  • Reviewing and submitting compliance, monthly and periodic reports.
  • Reviewing of departmental business processes and IT systems to meet the changing business needs

Minimum Requirements

Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a Supervisory positon in Underwriting department
  • Degree in Insurance or relevant field.
  • Completed AIIK or ACII
