- GROOTS
Kenya (Grassroots
Organizations Operating Together in Sisterhood in Kenya) is
a national movement of grassroots women comprising of over 3,500 women
–led, community based organizations. It has a current geographical
coverage of 17 out 47 counties in Kenya.
- These
include; Kiambu, Nairobi, Laikipia, Kilifi, Busia, Kakamega, Homa bay,
Migori, Nyandarua, Kitui, Nanyuki, Muranga, Isiolo, Marsabit, Nakuru and
lately Tana River county among others.
- GROOTS
Kenya was founded in 1995 after the 4th UN Conference on women held in
Beijing China, as a response to the inadequate visibility of grassroots
women in development and decision making platforms that directly impacts
them and their communities.
- Our programme
areas include
a) Community Response to HIV/AIDS Program,
b) Women and Property Program
c) Women Leadership and Governance Program and
d)
Community Resilience to Disaster and Climate Change.
- GROOTS
Kenya in partnership CISP, Nature Kenya and Procarsur Learning Route is
implementing a 3.5 years, EU Funded project titled REBUILD in Tana River
County. The Overall objective of the project is “to
contribute towards increased resilience of communities in ASAL areas of
Kenya to drought and other effects of climate change”.
- GROOTS
Kenya is responsible for implementing the project activities in Galole
sub-county and provide technical support and innovations for gender
mainstreaming to the entire project. Overall the project is expected to
achieve the following core outcomes among others;
- 1,200
hectares of land reclaimed through innovative pasture and fodder
production
- 120,000
community members reached with good practices on Community led Livestock
Disease Detection, protection through 6 radio programs
- Diversification
of livestock for 580 vulnerable households with inclusion of alternative
and breed improved livestock types(Bee keeping: 100 households, poultry:
280 households, Galla goats: 200 households)
- Adoption
of conservation agriculture technics, including the cultivation of drought
resistant and short maturing crop varieties (like amaranths, green gram,
cow peas) and fruit species by 1600 Households
- 120 women
households engaged in trading of livestock and crop marketable nutritious
products.
- 10 women
groups from pastoralists and agro-pastoralists communities engage in
fodder production, preservation and proper management and utilization of
crop residues.
- 20 women
groups adopt climate resilient agro-forestry practices
- 20 women
groups in Galole Sub County adopt improved irrigation practices, including
utilization of irrigation implements and water pumps.
- 30 women
groups networks/groups in Tana river supported in movement building,
leadership development and mentorship
- 1000
grassroots women engage in advocacy and governance initiatives at county,
national and regional level.
- Improved
outreach of quality veterinary services focusing on early livestock
disease detection, control and management and through support to
government vetinary officers in training and provision of vet/drug kits
- Improved
capacity of participating institutions and personnel in Disaster Risk
Response, Nutrition sensitive programming and gender advocacy
- Development
of 6 Publications on Gender Mainstreaming in Food security and Disaster

- Lead the
overall redesign, planning, implementation, quality control and monitoring
of the REBULD project in the Tana River
- Provide
technical leadership to community members in project activities such as
land reclamation, livestock disease control, livelihood diversification,
rangeland management, innovative pasture production, climate resilient
agro-forestry practices, water harvesting and conservation, adoption of
drought resistant and short maturing crop varieties and fruit species.
- Provide
technical support in development of market systems and business
enterprises for project participants
- Lead all
policy and advocacy initiatives of the project in food Security and
Disaster Risk Reduction, nutrition…….
- Deliberately
enhance grassroots women agency throughout the project intervention and
manage community dynamics as appropriate
- Facilitate
training of project staff on Disaster Risk Reduction and nutrition
sensitive programming
- Facilitate
all technical capacity building project activities to external
stakeholders and project participants
- Inbuilt
participatory project monitoring initiatives, develop all project
management and donor reports
- Represent
GROOTS Kenya in all project steering and partners meeting and make high
quality presentations.
- Act as the
team leader for the project
- Take lead
in the project mapping activities, baseline, mid-term, final evaluations
and reporting
Qualifications:
- Educational
level required: Degree in applied sciences (Rural Development,
Disaster Response Management, Natural Resource Management, Environment,
livelihoods, Agriculture)
- Technical
Training qualifications required. Training
on Disaster Risk Management and Livelihood
- Demonstrated
Experience in similar assignments, value chain analysis, supporting women
entrepreneurships and market systems, project management, EU or
bilateral donor funded projects
- Past
Experience working in ASAL region is mandatory
- Minimum of
5 years working experience
