The African Population and Health
Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international
research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant
multidisciplinary research.
Our researchers address important
development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as
education, population, health, aging, urbanization and well-being.
The APHRC seeks to recruit a Research
Officer to work in the West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Senegal.
Major Responsibilities:
·
Lead the process of obtaining ethical
approval for research projects
·
Develop study tools, training and
manuals and field guides to use for data collection
·
Coordinate the recruitment, training
and supervision of the field team
·
Coordinate field work and be
responsible for data quality
·
Mobilize and educate the community in
relation to the research project
·
Participate in the development of
research proposals
·
Support translation of project
documents from English to French and vice-versa
·
Conduct a literature review and
participate in writing scientific papers
·
Prepare regular field and project
reports
·
Participate in dissemination of research
findings and policy dialogue with appropriate audiences
·
Prepare policy briefs and fact sheets
from the projects’ findings
·
Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
·
Masters in Demography, Statistics,
Economics, Public Health, Geography, Sociology or related disciplines
·
At least 3 years’ post qualification
experience, preferably in a research setting
·
Experience conducting field research
and managing research team
·
Excellent oral and written
communication in English and French
·
Ability to work independently, set
priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines
·
Excellent interpersonal and
organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team
·
Experience working in Francophone

Job Vacancy: Post-doctoral Research Scientist (West Africa Regional Office – Senegal)
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)

Our researchers address important development issues and
challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as education, population,
health, aging, urbanization and wellbeing.
Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action,
engage with policy makers in the region to disseminate our research findings,
influence policy decisions and improve the quality of life in Africa.
The APHRC seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral Research
Scientist to work in the West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Senegal.
Major Responsibilities:
·
Lead and contribute to proposal
development and fundraising for research projects in the WARO;
·
Participate in the design of
scientific research and training tasks;
·
Lead and contribute to the
implementation of research projects in the following fields: Reproductive
Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health; Urban Health; Demography, Impact
·
Evaluation and related research
fields. Tasks include and are not limited to: project design, project
management and documentation, training of research assistants, field
supervision, data management and analysis, technical report writing;
·
Actively engage in scientific
publications including peer-reviewed articles, briefing papers and blogs;
·
Contribute to scientific writing, and
production of donor reports; and,
·
Lead in policy engagement and
dissemination of research findings to appropriate audiences.
Qualifications and experience
·
PhD in Demography, Statistics, Public
Health, Epidemiology, Health Geographic, Health Economics or a related field or
any other related discipline;
·
Experience working in a research
institution, conducting research, leading research programs or managing
research projects;
·
Strong proposal writing skills with a
good track record of winning research grants;
·
Good quantitative skills, with
extensive familiarity with statistical packages (e.g. STATA, SPSS or SAS);
·
Excellent scientific writing skills
and a good record of publications on relevant areas in sub-Saharan Africa;
·
Experience in research capacity
strengthening and facilitation of research training will be an advantage;
·
Ability to competently use both
English and French languages in writing and speaking.
Desirable
·
Experience and familiarity with a
diverse set of social science data sets;
·
Expertise in qualitative methods,
including familiarity with qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo);
·
Excellent interpersonal and
organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team;
·
Experience working in Francophone
West Africa.
Job Vacancy: Communications and Advocacy Officer (West Africa Regional Office – Senegal)

The APHRC seeks to recruit a Communications and Advocacy
Officer to work in the West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Senegal.
Duties and Responsibilities
·
Lead and/or oversee content editing
for a variety of products including corporate products such as annual reports,
newsletters and brochures, policy briefs, fact sheets, blogs etc.
·
Lead media outreach including
implementation of media and social media strategy
·
Oversee development of innovative
multimedia products including infographics, short films and animations
·
Engage with policy-makers and
relevant stakeholders to support policy dialogues
Skills and Qualifications
·
Master’s degree in Communications,
Journalism, Social marketing, Social Sciences, Community engagement, Advocacy
or a related field
·
At least five years of
post-qualification work experience in communications, writing and content
creation, preferably at an international organization
·
Excellent editing and writing skills
as well as ability to translate complex scientific facts into accessible
messages for general audiences
·
Visual media skills including use of
still and video camera; ability to develop video storyboards and basic editing
to a professional standard
·
Knowledge of graphic design and
desktop publishing, including Microsoft Publisher, and Adobe or Corel suites
·
Experience in using social media
channels and extending their reach
·
Experience of creating and editing
digital media and publishing across a variety of platforms including but not
limited to Storify, Prezi, Slideshare and YouTube
·
Familiarity with approaches for
planning, executing, and monitoring social media strategies
·
Excellent existing network of media contacts
at sub-regional level (West Africa)
·
Demonstrated willingness to work as
part of a team
·
Networking, interpersonal, analytical
and organizational skills coupled with resourcefulness, initiative and maturity
of judgment
·
Experience working in Francophone
West Africa
·
Excellent oral and written
communication in English and French
