Host Country Services Internship

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing Administrative, conference, Security and information services (www.unon.org).
The UNON Host Country Services internship is for 3 months with a possibility for extension depending on the needs of the Organization.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the Supervision of the Chief, the intern will:
·         Develop a Public Relations strategy and communication protocol used by all client agencies subscribed to the UNON Host Country Services, by analyzing and interpreting client opinions, attitudes and issues that might impact, for good or ill, the operations and plans of the unit;
·         Assist in updating the Standard Operating Procedures of the unit to include all the major changes in immigration, duty free and vat exemption procedures initiated by the Government of Kenya in the last year;
·         Assist in reworking/redesigning the present staff members guide (on immigration, duty-free and vat) to make it user friendly and more helpful to new, existing, and separating/retiring staff members;
·         Develop standard uniform templates for communicating important internal/external notices to agencies as and when required;
·         Research and suggest new methods of establishing effective communication with the various Government of Kenya departments that the Host Country Services Unit interfaces with regularly.

Smart & Safe Public Spaces Internship
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
UN-Habitat’s Safer Cities Programme and Global Public Space Programme are aiming to start a new joint project that will use digital technology and data to make public spaces safer, more inclusive and accessible. The intern will work across the Safer Cities Programme and the Global Public Space Programme, supporting the Safer Cities Coordinator and the Public Space Programme Offier to conceptualize and launch the new project. The working space of the intern will be in Safer Cities Programme Office.
The UN- HABITAT Smart and Safe Public Spaces internship is for 6 months.

Urban Planner Internship
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The city is the home of prosperity. It is the place where human beings find satisfaction of basic needs and access to essential public goods. The city is also where the ambitions, aspirations and other aspects of life are realized, providing contentment and happiness and where goods and culture is produced.
In 2012, the United Nations Humans Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT) created a tool to measure the sustainability of cities. This tool known as The City Prosperity Index was accompanied by a conceptual matrix, the Wheel of Urban Prosperity. In 2013, UN- Habitat received numerous requests from local authorities and central governments to estimate their respective prosperity indexes. Mayors and other decision-makers wanted to know how their cities feature in comparison with other cities. This included knowledge on how to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants, including gaining critical insights into which programmes and policies work, and the possible impacts these actions may have.
As a result of these demands, UN-Habitat transformed the City Prosperity Index into a global initiative known as the City Prosperity Initiative. UN-Habitat’s City Prosperity Initiative (CPI) enables city authorities, as well as local and national stakeholders, to identify opportunities and potential areas of intervention for their cities to become more prosperous. Its composite index made of six dimensions serves to define targets and goals that can support the formulation of evidence-based policies, including the definition of city-visions and long-term plans that are both ambitious and measurable.
The CPI is an integral part of the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development and is being adopted as a monitoring framework of the SDG Goal 11 and other SDGs that include urban components, as well as the New Urban Agenda. The CPI will enhance monitoring capacities of cities and will increase the prospects of higher accountability in the implementation of the 2030 Development Agenda and of the New Urban Agenda. Countries that decide to use the CPI will be able to identify, quantify, evaluate, monitor and report on progress made by cities and countries in a more structure manner.
The UN- HABITAT Urban Planner internship is for 6 months.

Programme Management Internship
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNISDR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNISDR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

·         Under the Supervision of the Office of the Executive Director, the intern will:
·         Support the Executive Director in promoting her social media presence: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and any other platform as directed by the Office of the Executive Director.
·         Monitor the social media profile of the Executive Director and propose responses as appropriate, in close cooperation with Advocacy, Outreach and Communications Branch (External Relations Division) to ensure that the social media profile of the Executive Director is in support of the overall UN-Habitat communication strategy.
·         Ensure follow up as appropriate on social media platforms on activities of the Executive Director.
